G60 Opinions (See Pics)
« on: 07 September 2014, 00:33 »
Hello all,
I was originally looking for a mk2 golf gti 16v, but with a catch (it had to be a LHD as I am moving abroad).
Anyway, I have come across a 1991 G60, which has covered about 146000km. Quite low millege for age. It is totally original, and seems to be in good nik. I have not physically seen the car yet, and will be speaking to the seller maybe tomorrow.
Which is where I need your help.
Well the question is "What do I ask"? I have never owned a mk2 golf before, and am totally new to these cars.
I have been driving more of the modern cars, "which I find boring", and have always wanted a mk2 golf..
I will not be viewing the car without asking the right questions, as it is a 12 hour drive from my house.
I will try to upload some pictures of the car, so you can get a better idea.
Or shall I go for a gti 16v. AAAAAHH opinions please  :undecided:
I am an amateur, and don't know the difference in drive ability between the two.
Anyway your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Check for rust and body work condition. Under arches, in filler cap, check the boot for rear end damage. G60 superchargers are apparently made of toffee and need very good servicing. There are guides to buying mk2s but I haven't got time to post the links. Take whatever you get from that which says buy on body work alone and then include that the engines are much more rare so it needs a good service history.

But as always, buy on bodywork.

Many thanks for your reply everyone, I have spoken to the seller, and he said that the supercharger has never been serviced to his knowledge. There has been 3 previous owners, and he said the car has done about 12000 miles in the last 8 years by the previous owner, and only about 3000 miles by the seller. He is selling as he now has 4 cars, and cannot afford to keep them all. The service book has stamps by VW, but not for the past 9 years, as the owner has always serviced the car himself. (Not many receipts). He understands that the car will need a supercharger service/ rebuild, so he has knocked off £500.
It has 4 good tyres, 2 x original keys, power steering, No AC,
The bodywork..... he said it is in very good condition, with no, or very little rust. He took it up the ramp a few moths ago, and didn't see rust, and said it looked very solid. The MOT guy apparently said the same thing. No rust on the fuel cap area etc.
He said it drives very tight, and pulls very well. No modifications done to the car.
NOW THE BIG QUESTION.
What do you guys think? Your the pro's.
Shall I go to view the car? (12 Hour drive).
Shall I ask him for specific pictures?
Should I be worried about the car Clonking out before it reaches my house? ( No supercharger service etc, and no recent stamps in the VAG book.
Once again, opinions please....
Thanks again everyone

Serviced the car himself yet hasn't serviced the charger? When was it MOT'd and was there any advisories? How much is up for? When was it last serviced? It certainly looks straight and original.

Sitting on the left takes a little getting to use to but you get th hang of it.  Overtaking on B roads needs planning.  Don't expect brilliant fuel economy out of the G60 - it's not bad but don't expect mid 30's.

Where abouts in the Midlands are you?

A working g60 charger is a working g60 charger. They can let go at any time. What pulley is it running?
No history in all its life and the chances are greater.

Do a search for the mfa boost check.

What do you intend to use the car for? If it's a weekend toy that will only do a few hundred miles a year, then the G60 might be worth a punt.

If it's a daily car, I's stick to your original plan to get a 16V. There are far more to choose from, even in LHD (albeit not in this country) so you can sift through the rubbish to find a good one. Also being 20+ years old, either car will go wrong at some point if it's to be well used. A 16V is going to be much easier to fix.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I'd buy it if it's well maintained but ideally you want it checked over by someone who knows G60's. They are reliable enough if their driven sensibly. Mine returns about 35mpg with daily use albiet in a corrado, my charger is a stage 2 at 15 years and 50,000 miles and still boosting well but i'd get it rebuilt for peace of mind if he's knocking money off or perhaps organise it to be done before you buy it as part of the deal.

sounds okay - any mods at all?

if youre traveling that far id ask for lots of high photos of anywhere that they rust , so all the lower panels , rear panel seams , screen surround , petrol cap , floors , bottoms of doors etc

its all very well him saying little to no rust , but then everyone says that then you turn up and its a nail

Looks in great condition from the pictures. Ask for as many high res ones as you can and study them in detail as it's a long trip!

First thing you would want to do is get the charger rebuilt and given a good check over by an expert garage. These are weird old engines that need care. Trouble these days is there are not many garages about I would recommend to help.

What's the price? :)
