RainX and Gtechnic G1
« on: 06 September 2014, 08:24 »
Took delivery of my GTD without the dealer doing anything to it and have since thoroughly detailed it myself.  I've used RainX for years but took the plunge with gtechnic for the glass this time round.  No issues with side and rear windows but front is a b!tch.  Applied correctly but the wiper on drivers side constantly chattered/skipped despite changing to Bosch blades and having had time to "bed in".

Polished it off with gtechnics glass polish and wipers worked ok so applied Rainx.......again same issue.  Second set of wipers and still doing it.  Polished windscreen again and alls good with nothing on it.  What's going on?
Ordered Jun 18: R 5dr, IG, DSG, Prets, DLA, climate w/s and tints.
Aug 14 - Jul 18: GTD 5dr, CSG, DSG, S&S pack, Vienna leather and Santiago's.

So you cleaned everything off, G1 and RainX and it was ok?  Perhaps that's your answer.

I had similar issue last year.  I cleaned everything off the glass using various things including vinegar, but the wiper judder persisted.  So, like you I switched to Bosch aero blades (excellent) and all was good until I applied the RainX again.  Now I just leave the front windscreen clear of everything and have had no further problems.

Rain X seems to do that to wipers.  Did you follow the instructions for applying the Gtech stuff?

I had juddering on my mk7 for about a month after having g1 applied. It did eventually stop but was very annoying.

Your problem is a poorly aligned wiper arm. It is not presenting the blade exactly 90° to the screen. The extra lubricity of Rain X (etc) reduces friction and reduces the forces on the blade dragging and therefore bending over to the point that it slides properly. Instead it is digging in, bouncing up, digging in etc.

The fix of using an adjustable spanner to twist the arm on my Mk4 didn't keep me awake at night, but it certainly worked and I don't have any problems at all now using Rain X.

But I don't know if I would be able to repeat that fix if I had just bought a brand new Mk7.

If the wiper blade is 100% clean (if not hit with IPA/Eraser) then also coat the tip of the blade with a smear of G1, or if you don't have any some Reload, C2V3 or other Si02 based sealant.
