Urgent help needed...

Hello guys hoping you can help me out. I have a 1991 Golf gti big bumper 8v 3 door with some issues that I can't seem to sort. Purchased the car recently and it misfires on idle, but seems to drive fine and acceleration is smooth.

I had the oil, filters changed along with waterpump, spark plugs, leads and distributor. The car needed these things done and I also assumed that it would sort the idle misfire out. Comes out of the garage and starts and misfiores again on idle. The revs do not fluctuate.
If the car is allowed to idle for around 10-15 minutes temp needle goes up very slightly but not enough for any cause of alarm.

Where to start? I am not a mechanic and pay to have things done so assume that you are talking to a layman...

Have you had a new distributor cap and arm inside?
I had a similar problem before and it was the arm inside. I think it was a GSF part so I bought a genuine Vw and problem solved.
However it could even be something simple like a lose wire maybe not sure if the timing would have something to do with it?

The mechanic turned somethign underneath the distributor and that has helped a bit tbf. Engien temp rising is probably waterpump he said that will get changed.
Its very annoying as the car seems to drive fine but on idle its a bit rough - note; the revs do not fluctuate

Sounds like he turned the dizzy to adjust the timing, I would take a look at the cam belt timing and make sure it all lines up

The MAF has been changed in the past but seems that the clips that hold it in place were broken and it has been siliconed onto the airbox. Also couldn't find the lambda sensor on the car?!

where is the maf on a mk2 golf? as far as I know there was never a mk2 golf 8v fitted with an maf. oh and there is no lambda sensor on them.

Maf is on the airbox.

couldn't find the lambda sensor as it doesn't exist it seems.
The MAF is on the box. Anywhere I can buy an airbox?

a m2 golf gti has a vaf (vane air flow meter) not an maf ( mass air flow meter) sorry for being fussy but that's just me.
