Does the gti have the same engine as the r
« on: 04 September 2014, 17:20 »
Just wondering if the engine in the gti is the same as the r internally, I know the r has a bigger turbo which is why it's 300bhp but is it the same engine, after having the car revoed & voiding my warranty at the same time, would like to know if the engine is more than capable of handling the power.

Not the same, many internal parts differ.

Block is the same, might have different bore coating thou. Certainly mechanical bits like crank, connecting rods etc are different.

Both the GTI and the R have the same EA888 Gen 3 2.0 TSI Engine Block.

The R has a different cylinder head and bigger turbo.

The GTI will easily handle a Stage 1 Revo remap. They will be pushing these cars well over 400BHP soon with the hardware upgrades coming out.

What makes you think otherwise?

It was something I watched on YouTube that got me concerned, about having to pull the gti engine out & replace it with the r to achieve 380bhp.

What they mean is that there isn't enough hardware available right now to boost the GTI to 400BHP. The most powerful modded GTI MK7's are sat at about 340BHP now and that's with Stage 1, Full TBE and intake.

So they had to transplant the Golf R engine along with all it's internal parts so they have a better base which they can easily push to 380BHP in this case.

To put it simply;

Golf R Stage 1 = 360BHP
Golf GTI Stage 1 = 300BHP

Yes I'm aware they kept the stock turbo in the GTI and so the R engine wouldn't have given the car 300BHP but I'm guessing the slight differences of internal parts have given it the edge over the GTI.

To get the GTI over 350BHP we'll be needing Stage 2 software and the hardware upgrades that accommodate it.

Don't worry. The GTI engine is more than capable of pushing over 400BHP. The parts just aren't available right now, still being researched.

Why not simply ask VW, as you have no idea where forum members get their info from and how accurate it is?

Have you ever spoke to VW? Not wanting to stereotype but they barely know what the GTI is never mind know what engine is inside.

You'd have to ask a tech expert in VW Wolfsburg which isn't practical. So while the information on this forum may not generally be 100% accurate at least it acts as a quick guide.
