Tyre options for the GTI only

The GY Assy 2's lasted about 18-19k miles on my stage 1 ED30. For comparison, the factory fit RE050's lasted 22-23k miles

Ive always found Bridgestones last and last - which only prolongs the agony of how sh!te they are.

This was for 225/45 R17 size, the closest size to the GTI that they've reviewed.

Tyre life? That is either an average of front and back, or back only, no-one can expect 49kmiles from any tyre on the front of a front wheel drive car. I had P7s on my last Scirocco and they lasted 11k miles on the fronts due to highly irregular wear pattern which left the inner and outer 1/3 of the tyre with 6mm and the centre 1/3 with nothing at 11k miles - no alignment issues or over-inflation (lower end of VWs recommendations) with my car. They never let me down on grip though. I've heard good things about the other 2 though.

Agreed, I can't find anywhere how they calculate tyre life though. I suppose it just gives a useful indication when comparing between tyres, eg the Pirelli will last longer than the Conti.  The Conti does seem to get excellent reviews wherever you look too.

Why are the Continentals so great? The Goodyear Eagle F1's Asymmetric 2 have better grip in the wet are quieter and the same price? I must be missing a trick.

There isn't much in it according to Which? to be honest.  The Contis had slightly better wet handling performance but the same for wet braking.  I think the Contis did well in autoexpress too, it seems to be these Goodyear opti or efficient grip that are tested at the moment, which both do well.

Incidentally Contis seem to be predominately at the top for the majority of tyre sizes in both summer and winter varieties.

It's funny you should say that because I've just seen the Goodyear Efficient Grip tyres and the ratings seen well, excellent? B for Fuel Efficiency, A for Grip & only 69DB which makes it more fuel efficient and quieter than the Asymmetric 2 and it's £5 cheaper per corner too.

These are user reviews though and not 'expert' group tyre test ratings.  Granted user reviews are useful.  If you take a look at the links below the Contis have more wins than the Goodyear, having said that they are not always tested together.  Personally I've always gone for Contis and have found them great, I dare say others will say the same about Goodyear too    I don't think you can go far wrong with either to be honest.

I have the Bridgestones on my GTD, I've not found them too bad.  I'm sure when they've worn a bit and the roads are greased up I may reassess my opinion.

The Bridgestones Potenza's are pretty awful mate to be fair. Lots of wheel spin in 1st , 2nd & even 3rd with Traction Control on.

I've just ordered 2 new Goodyears for the front as my Bridgestone Potenza are gone after just 9500 miles.
