Tyre mobility kit

Is there any reason why i wouldn't be able to carry one of VW's tyre mobility kits instead of the spare in my R? As i've mentioned before we're expecting our first baby and have considered changing the car, however we might just hang on to the R for a while but the extra depth in the boot would be helpful now and then.

I think that after a puncture and using one of these you'll need a new tyre as these things make such a mess the puncture cant be permanently repaired.

I know the early ones used to be like the expanding foam builders use but i thought the new ones were more like a sealant fluid that can be removed?

Could be wrong tbh, i think the VW one you have to roll the car forward so it coats the inside of the tyre and then inflate it with the included compressor.

It should be usable - if you go with keeping the foam in the boot, simply get yourself some form of AA/RAC/Green flag recovery cover and if it doesn't work, get the car recovered.

I know I wasn't keen on the standard Vauxhall tyre gunk kit on my last car (Astra VXR) so I bought a spare and all the fittings for the boot but if space is at a premium it sounds a bit like a good plan for you.

I think with both types the tyre is salvageable for repair, it just depends on whether  the tyre repairers can be arsed to clean it all out properly to find the puncture point and have it clean enough to be confident that the the patch will adhere correctly. If they need to take 30 mins and use a few hundred mL of specialist solvents they're going to decline.

The Pirelli P7 self sealers have a layer of sticky green rubbery gel (like semi-set silicone bathroom sealant) going the full width of the tread on the inside of the tyres.

Most drivers go the opposite way from sealant to space saver but needs must I suppose. I know I did with my Audi

I've read online of folk having the tyre cleaned (supposedly) and then having problems later when some sealant works lose and is effectively rattling about inside causing a constant drone when going above certain speeds. But that was with the old stuff.

What about an actual repair kit?

Get yourself a space saver wheel. You gain as much space in the boot as with sealant plus you don't have to wait for recovery if you have a blow out.

As you can see in the link the car already has a space saver but because of the AWD system the extra space has been robbed.

Those repair kits look interesting but not sure how confident i'd be with the results considering the performance of the car?? Plus i don't think i'd fancy doing it at the side of the road!


I don't think there would be any reason why i couldn't carry the mobility kit instead but i need to check if the valves i have fitted are the ones that can have the middle removed like in this video?:
