I wouldn't rush to fit this, mine fell off by itself and jammed in the fan and back of the rad

Maybe for others (later builds?) omission isn't all about penny pinching then?  :undecided:

Maybe that's why they got rid of it. Mines held down with sticky tape

It wasn't cheap at 30 squids all in but had a voucher to use up so what the heck. Needed to get two separate fixing lugs so assume it will mount as per engine cover.

Looks neater but if it falls off into the fan, and it's not supposed to have it, will it invalidate the warranty?

Reply from my dealer:
"I have checked with our parts department the trim is not listed as being on your Golf so it is not missing, I've spoken with one of our master technician, it is not an important trim, Volkswagen sometimes change how they build cars so an earlier one the factory might have fitted the trim to."
Confirms what others have heard, seems a reasonable & responsible action for VW to delete it if it's prone to fail & jam the rad fan!

You'll know if VW have great concerns about this part, when cars with the trim fitted go in for routine service or warranty work and come out without it.

Installed the manifold cover today which has been dropped from later GTI's (mine was BW26). Pretty easy to fit, held on securely by a bullet fixing and a long strut fixing which disappears inside the manifold. Pleased with it, looks much better and will be easier to keep clean.

You could also notice that they changed the location of the brake fluid container from between the air filter pipe and the battery to the top left corner of the engine. No idea to why they would replace it though. In addition to that manifold cover; I collected my car in February and I do have the cover but I have no clue what build week my car is. I don't know if this has been asked before but is it possible to check what BW the car is from the VIN number? It would help confirming whether the cap is based on BW or just different countries because I have seen pictures of american GTIs with the trim fitted.
