Hi all,

I have little experience with cars so please bear with me, my Golf is 16 years old and runs nicely but I suspect it has been really battered about over the years. I've only had it a few months and bought it just as a run around in between cars, and it's been very reliable (and so much fun to drive!), however the engine looks pretty shocking! It's spitting oil everywhere from the rocker cover and I think a few other places. Anyway, it's my back up car now as I have another so I would like to have a go at fixing a few bits myself, the first thing I want to have a go at is there is a broken hose on the engine, what is it? Does this need replacing or can I cut off the crusty bit and reattach it?  :undecided:

The car had a few issues that had been purposely hidden so the state of the engine is a bit of a worry, I'm attaching photos of the broken hose and the engine. I've seen a few older engines but never one that looked this bad so I'm wondering if this is going to be too big of a job for me, I don't have much spare cash to throw at this car as much as I love her! What do you think? Is it as bad as it looks?

Thank you in advance!

my run around engine bay looks alot worse, but until it stops working, no need to change it!

the pipe thats broken is called the crank case breather pipe, couple quid from vw or if you look around a couple breakers might have one for cheaper, best bet is go to your local VW and get them to give you the part numbers on an estimate sheet, if its cheap enough, get it from them, if not, at least you have part numbers to search the internet with

not that difficult to change, by the looks of the picture a set of screw drivers should do for you, just make sure you remove any broken bits as they are not good for the internals of the engine!

That's fantastic, I guess it is testament to how good these engines are that the car still drives so well! Thank you so much for the reply/

That engine doesn't look too bad to be honest, I've seen a lot worse.

As above just swap the crank breather pipe and also the rocker cover gasket, that gives you chance to rub down the cam cover and give it a lick of paint (engine bay could do with a jet wash too). Mk3 engines are pretty bomb proof.
