You can get the standard exhaust from VW except the backbox (which was unique to the anni with polished tail pipes).
I've gone for a stainless system but mines not meant to be 100% standard (I know the purists will only go for all original looks)

I was lucky and found on eBay an original VW back box and centre pipe brand new for less than £50 combined however the centre box I had to get aftermarket. I tried a Bosal and then Klarius brands, the Klarius wasn't too bad but I had to make adjustments to avoid it knocking - which is normal with aftermarket exhausts.

Try and get a original one but if not I can vouch that the Jetex fits perfectly and looks great. The only reason I took mine off is because I was finding it a bit too noisy as I'm getting old (29 - lol)

There's a Jetex on eBay 371123835346 (not mine)

If you have the money I would get a custom one made and fitted as getting aftermarket ones to fit without knocking can be a real pita.
Jetex do seem to fit best and it is possible to buy a Jetex  back box and have the rest made and fitted in either SS or MS for best fit.
Any new exhaust will show up how good your engine mounts are, best make sure these are good if knocking in the tunnel winds you up

I've been doing quite a bit of searching regarding the exhaust for the Anniversary 16V and have found something similar to the original. I'm unsure what the quality of these are, they are produced by Imasaf and a back box can be found here:

http://www.ebay.de/itm/IMASAF-Auspuff-ESD-Endtopf-VW-GOLF-III-2-0-GTI-16V-110KW-/400685928415?pt=DE_Autoteile&fits=Model%3AGolf+III&hash=item5d4abe0fdf

Anyone know of the quality of Imasaf?

I don't know the quality of Imasaf but the o.e number's given for reference are std 16v parts (1G6253609R - 1H0253609G - 1H6253609AG - 1H6253609Q) and match the Walker 19108 and Bosal 233-489 (both which come with the larger tailpipes).

(The 8v anni back box is 1H6253609AK and 16v is 1H6253609AL)

Dunno how bad the rust is on the backbox. But if you replace everything else and try to weld it?

Jetex is a good all round choice.
