Lengthening the clutch cable?

I've got a Mk3 8V GTI, and as I was driving today the clutch pedal went straight to the floor...I assumed the clutch cable had broken, but in fact it had just come off the lever that attaches it to the gearbox (a little metal clip had broken). I've got the new clip and accompanying rubber buffer from VW (only £2.91!), but I'm having real trouble fitting it.

The clutch cable doesn't seem to be long enough to let me put the clip on. I've tried taking the white plastic compression guards (?!) off and compressing the end of the cable before putting them back on again, but it's just not quite long enough.

Any ideas how I can get it on? Do I have to disconnect the cable at the pedal end first or something?

You cant lengthing the cable there self adjusting cables try disconnecting it form the pedal box n see if that works then connect at gearbox end,shud work like jus changed my cable last week went straight on that way
