Hi All,

I've just picked up my first Mk6 Golf GTI DSG and am sat here at 220am reading threads on anything mods to maintenance to performance and pictures. Got the bug somewhat I reckon.

I'm new to the forum and will be reading up on what to do next and so on but here's a quick overview of the spec:

59 plate,
FVWSH,
53k,
Black,
DSG
Full black leather,
18 Monza Shadow Alloys
Sat Nav,

Having only been on the forum half an hour I purchased some spicy LED rear lights from http://www.xenonz.co.uk/golf-rgtigtd-led-rear-lights.html. - Can't wait to get them on.

Having driven the car the best part of 3 hours to get it home and been on the forum, I've got a few questions I'm hoping you can help with:

Do the electric folding mirrors sync with locking the car?
How do I play music from my phone through the sound system?
Any suggestions on where the best (and cheapest!) place around Nottingham is to have the Vagcom/VCDS error codes removed from fitting rear LED lights should that happen?
Where can I get a iPhone 5 Media cable (don't think its called that - There's two cables that plug into the middle section) from?
The right hand exhaust is sticking out slightly further than the left - Is that normal?
One of the alloys has some bubbling under the lacquer but no marks on the alloy - Will VW refurb under goodwill as its got FVWSH and is clearly a defect?
I bought it from a private garage so don't have any warranty on it - Is this worth getting? (The garage recommended going through them and using Warrantywise)?
Excuse my french but WTF is with the Timing Chain Tensioner failure all about and what can I do to cover myself in the event of this happening?

Thanks for reading, listening and replying in advance! Look forward to speaking and meeting you at some stage!

Welcome, i did a bit research on Warrantywise, here's the link. http://www.rac.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?15485-More-Warranty-woes&highlight=warrantywise You'd be better starting a repair fund. If you read that guys complaint first then the CEOs response, i had actually read quite a few responses on forums from him....and yes he does look like he has a standard template letter. Warranty companies don't want to part with money for your repairs.
On the black car the LED tail will make a difference.
Audi S1 gone, awaiting 1.5tsi r-line, pan roof, led lights front and rear, active dash, 18" jurva alloys and a dealer fitted Oettinger roof spoiler in tornado red.

Welcome mate, nice spec, get some pics up

See you've got the best mod already sorted.  The LED tails make a massive difference.

Thought about aftermarket front LEDs?  For interior, consider swapping all your interior lights for LEDs too, fitting GTI seat inserts, dead pedal cover, cill guards etc, all small but effective mods.  And then there's the performance mods, plenty of info and members on here to advise about those.

Is it the RNS 310 or 510 sta nav?  Does the car have Bluetooth installed?  If so, you can stream the music via that.  Or connect it via the MDI media cable in the centre console.  Did your car come with any media cables?  The media cable for iphone 5 (lightning) is available from VW but think they charge ridiculous price approx £60-70.  Pretty sure you can pick one up on ebay for less, or use the old 30pin version and use an apple lightning adaptor.  There's threads in mk7 section about the newer cable.

The tensioner comes down to either monitoring it and praying it'll be ok, or coughing up for preventative action of fitting the revised version.  All the info you need is in the timing chain thread at top of this section.

Look into the warranty or as said start a maintenance fund yourself.

Could try VW with the alloy issue but wouldn't hold your breath.

Lots to think about

Brilliant spec on the car, the after market LED's make a great difference. I'm in the process of getting a set for the front after changing the rear, and all the interior lights for LED's.

I found that with the timing chain tensioner to have a look on the side of the engine housing, I have a 2009 in CW and i was worried about this problem when I read up on it, its an expensive thing to fix. But I found out my car had received a new engine in 2011. Worth looking out for first.

Warranty would be a good idea I will be carrying mine on after the 12 months runs out on mine.

If you have Bluetooth and the RNS510 system you should be able to play straight to the stereo, however for some reason in mine it only plays thru one speaker I think, something I need to look at.

Also get some pics up, show it off and enjoy it, I've had mine nearly 6 months now and it still brings a smile to my face every time I drive it.

Ebay, loads on there.  They have a positive / negative so need to put them in right way or they won't work, just need to switch them round.  Red LEDs look good in the footwells.  This is what you need

Vanity lights - 36mm festoon
Map lights, glovebox, foot wells - W5W 501s
Boot - festoon

This is a good guide to fitting http://www.vwgolf.net.au/showthread.php?8502-DIY-Interior-Lights-Install-MKVI-Golf-lt-lt-lt-PICTURE-INTENSIVE-gt-gt-gt

Welcome to a very good forum Sid and hopefully you're enjoying a very nice car.

Adding to the helpful replies to date, I've quoted you and numbered some of your queries to add my own tuppence worth, so here goes:

1. I don't think it sounds normal.  As far as I know the chrome exhaust tips should sit symmetrically and evenly without one protruding more than the other.

2.  These alloys can be prone to milk spotting/ a white rash under the lacquer.  You say the lacquer is bubbling.  Do you know whether or not the affected alloy wheel has previously had a refurb, the finish of which is now failing (if so, that would obviously invalidate any warranty)?

However, given that the car is older than 3 years and given that you did not buy from a franchised VW dealer, I would be amazed if VW entertained a request for them to repair or replace the wheel under warranty or goodwill.  That's said, goodwill requests - for anything - will always have a greater chance of succeeding, even if you did not buy directly from VW, if the car has a comprehensive franchised VW history and if the facilitating franchise believes you to be a longstanding or potentially longstanding and loyal customer.

3.  You say you bought from a 'private garage'.  Not sure what you mean by that, however, you also say that they tried to sell you a recognised warranty and so I will presume you bought from a recognised motor trader.  Therefore, as has been mentioned, if problems arise with the car, the trader who sold you what will doubtless have been an expensive car, has responsibilities to you and in particular during your first 6 months of ownership, regardless of what they might try and tell you.

Relevant legislation is the Sale of Goods Act 1979:
The act relates to the fact the consumer has a right to expect quality, fitness for all the purposes supplied, freedom from minor defects and a reasonable expectation for repairs to have been undertaken within a reasonable time without causing significant inconvenience. If these things are not the case with your purchase you can assert non conformity to the contract of sale within the period of six months from the date of purchase.

Buying from a motor trader (or dealer) extends you greater rights than buying privately -
'Wear and tear':
A seller is not responsible for fair wear and tear, so you cannot claim goods are unsatisfactory just because they've become a bit worn over time. For goods to be unsatisfactory they need to be faulty when you bought them, even if you didn't discover the fault until later. If the goods don't last as long as they should, this suggests that they were faulty from the beginning.

** If a defect is detected within 6 months, it is presumed that the defect existed at the time of sale or delivery, unless the seller can prove otherwise. **

Whilst better to do so, *** you do not have to examine items before buying them. This means that if you haven't spotted something wrong before buying an item, you can still claim it is not of satisfactory quality. This applies even if you would have spotted the defect if you had examined it closely ***. However, if you don't complain quickly, you may have to accept a repair, replacement or partial refund, rather than a full refund.

If it becomes necessary, more information on the S of G.A can be found on this link:
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/

4.  My own thoughts are - if you are not in a position to undertake competent repairs yourself - where expensive and complex vehicles are involved, it is always a good idea to invest in a reputable warranty, over and above your Sale of Goods Act rights and entitlements.  Opinions vary.  Also, it might be possible to now purchase a VW extended warranty for similar cost to other after market warranties, provided you allow a VW dealership to give the car a health check at cost to you beforehand.

5.  As mentioned, the thread on timing chain "rattle" and potential failure is a must read.  If your car has a full service history it should not be difficult to find out via the servicing garage(s) whether or not the tensioner has ever failed/ consequential damage occurred or even whether the tensioner and associated components have simply been replaced as a preventative measure.

If there is no record of the tensioner and component parts having been done, the relevant parts can be replaced as a preventative measure at an Independent Specialist for approx £350 and personally, if it has not been done, I would invest on that work before embarking upon expensive cosmetic modifications.  Likewise, I would generally let the car 'settle in' and see how it behaves before lavishing expensive cosmetic kit on it (it appears already to be a highly spec'd car anyway).

Hopefully the garage selling you the car is reputable.  Your taking away an expensive car from them, apparently under the impression that your only recourse - should future assistance be required from them - is to additionally purchase an aftermarket warranty through them would make me a little wary.  I'm sure this can all be attributable to minor communication gaps at the point of sale but it's worth clarifying, particularly if you are potentially already querying the exhaust fitment and an alloy wheel finish for example.

Please take my post in the well intentioned manner it is sent which is to ensure that as opposed to "a wing and a prayer" you can enjoy a great car with confidence and should any problems arise, hopefully you will be in a well informed position to advance your rights and entitlement to prompt and hassle free resolution.

Blimey! You lot are a helpful bunch - I don't think I've met such nice people.. Even in real life lol ;-)

Right where do I start..

The right hand exhaust is sticking out further than the left by 3-4 inches - Still not a clue on this one..

The milk spotting/ a white rash under the lacquer on the alloy - Spoke to the garage I bought it from and they couldn't confirm if it'd been refurbed so I rang Vw locally today and they said to bring it down and they'd have a look (holding breath not taking place just yet..)

LED Lights - Ordered but Xenonz Uk emailed me to say they're out of the country until the end of the month so got a refund and will order them later unless anyone can recommend any other suppliers?

The Audio System - It's the RNS 510 SAt Nav/Bluetooth and it came with two media cables for what seems like the Nokia 402 and 702. It works a dream with my phone when calling etc but for some reason when I play a song from the phone it doesn't come out of the speakers? Very weird. Instead as a temporary measure I'm using the AUX cable to play them for now.

The dreaded timing chain tensioner topic - So I rang Vw and they checked my reg and said it didn't need doing and would be fine until at least 100k. So I told her about my findings and the possibilities of it becoming an issue and causing considerable damage and not to mention a hefty bill, she said they would investigate the matter and would provide 'a contribution' towards the repair as the car has been serviced as per the service schedule. This didn't fill me with confidence so I'm going to see a Vw specialist locally who said they'd take a look under the bonnet and suggest what they best course of action to take is.

If Vw are saying that it doesn't need changing, can I pay for them to change it anyway as a preventative measure?

In addition to this, the garage (motor dealer but not main dealer) checked the policy book said this about WarrantyWise and their levels of cover - All three levels of cover state the following:

"Other items covered....

Drive belts: Camshaft timing belt
NOTE A failure of the camshaft timing belt can cause significant engine damage and should always be changed (including tensioner) within the manufacturers recommended period"

In exclusions, it states the following

"The replacement of any camshaft timing belt, tensioner and associated cost where it cannot be shown within the vehicles service record that the correct servicing of the camshaft belt and tensioner has been carried out"

So what that suggested to me is that it is covered if it fails, provided it has been changed as per the service schedule. If its not changed and it goes then I guess I'm kind of on my own. If I do what is recommended then I will be covered. On the platinum cover which is £332 for 12 months the claim limit is £5000 for a single claim.

However, before I do anything I think I'll ask vw what extended warranty (if any) they provide which should cover me against any issues costing me an arm and a leg or setting up a savings fund and taking the food from my kids mouths (albeit I don't have any kids).

If you're still reading ;-) I have two last requests.. Has anyone updated their firmware on their RNS510 unit for Video In Motion so you can play DVD's when the cars moving (for the passengers entertainment of course)?

And where's the best (and cheapest!) place in and around the midlands to get a detailing job on it?

Thanks everyone and pics coming tomorrow!

Goodnight!
