mk5 gti dsg jerky and cuts out when idle?
« on: 05 August 2014, 23:44 »
Hi all, new here but been having problems with my 57 gti dsg which has been to the garage plenty of times but still has the problems....

Basically from time to time (two or 3 times a week) the car feels jerky almost like it's being pulled back, which seems to happen when I'm not pushing down hard on the accelerator.  Also when idle - at traffic lights, junctions etc - it sometimes just cuts out, like it's stalled.

I've been to a local garage as the car is under warranty,  they've done a smoke test (no leaks), put on a new air flow sensor and another time put on a new evap sensor (I think it was called).

Each time the car seems to be fine for a couple of weeks then the problems start again.

Had it serviced a week or so ago but again that's not cured it.

Has this happened before to anyone or does anyone know what the problem may be? Last time I went in there weren't any codes showing on their computer so think they're at a loss as well....

I'd be really grateful for any ideas cos I love the car when it's running well but this is becoming a bit of a nightmare!

Cheers
Rich

At a guess (I'm nothing more than an amateur home mechanic), I'd suggest looking into cleaning your inlet manifold and/or throttle body. If these are dirty it could explain the rough running and failure to catch the engine from stalling when coming to a stop. Also just double check air intake and pipes for blocks.

Thanks for the reply, I might try to get it to the garage this week and get them to do that... My skills are hopeless!

Have you considered Terraclean? They now offer an inlet cleaning service which has a fair bit of praise and people comment on a smoother running engine. Have a Google and maybe book a service, much easier and quicker than pulling the inlet manifold off. Think its about £100 for the inlet clean. Also, despite being told to not use it, grab a bit of Redex and give your fuel system some cleaning. Do you know the last time the fuel filter was changed?

Also, have you checked the pressure control valve (PCV)? Ease to test, have the engine at idle and remove the dipstick. If the engine tries to stall then its fine but if it idles fine then you PCV is faulty. Its a known weak spot and causes running issues. Its about £100 to replace also.

I think the fuel filter was changed when it was serviced a couple of weeks ago. I'll try the PCV test and see what happens, and I'll google terraclean. Thanks again for the advice - appreciate it!
