Creaking rear end!
« on: 05 August 2014, 19:38 »
Have a pretty annoying creaking at the rear end. Guessing it has to do with the hand brake rather than the suspension? The creaking is more obvious when the handbrake is on. The handbrake seems pretty poor for holding the car, it is all the way up and barely holds on steeper inclined drives. Any thoughts to back me up? Is it a tricky job replacing the cables?
Thanks!

I have a similar problem, creaking when I brake when going slow and creaking over bumps when going slow, think it's suspension bushes, haven't had chance to investigate

The car is fine when it's running. Even over bumps etc.  with mine it seems to be when the handbrake is on that the creaking is pretty bad - which is why I don't think it's my suspension. However, I am still finding my way around the golf. My last project car was a MK2 Scirocco which had drums on the rears :)

Are you sure it's just not your car creeping forward, pull your handbrake up higher and see if that stops it

Think my cables might need adjusting or replaced. The lever is up as far as it will go and sometimes it struggles to grip when there is a bit of an incline. The creaking is definitely linked to the handbrake rather than the suspension. When someone goes to sit in the back it's pretty embarrassing the noise the car makes. I have ordered a couple of new cables and will fit them next week and see if that fixes the problem.
Thanks for replying and giving some pointers :)
