You know you want to keep it.  ;) Might be worth getting a second opinion, or sourcing some of the parts secondhand.

Hmmm. Why does the garage say you need these bits.......what exactly is wrong with the car?
Is it that your fuel filler neck has corroded and the rusted metal has fallen into the tank?

From what you have said so far I'd say no to forking out that sort of money. Lets do a little fault diagnosis first.

thats exactly what has happened....the filler neck was replaced and now its making big trouble in injector land.

and your both right, i love that car..but its costing me a fourtune as i know nothing about them.

it still runs but takes about 20 turns to fire and then is rwal hard to get warm...also apparently thier is no antifreeze in it and thats a 'bad sign' says mr mechanic??

he said to cut my losses

but im not sure

Looks like it's time for you to get in there and have a go yourself. Otherwise its going to cost you a fortune and you're going to get ripped off, by the look of it.
You don't want to let her go.........so don't, have a go, you've not got a lot to lose and you might be amazingly gratified in fixing it yourself at minimal cost.

First thing I would do is disconnect the fuel supply line to the fuel pump. There is a small strainer in there. Its the first line of defense from crud in the tank. I'll put money on that being full of corrosion deposits etc.

Not sure on the exact procedure for cleaning out the tank but I would imagine it would need to be removed. Removal is not too difficult, can't be as I've managed it.

If I lived near Bath I would willingly come and help.........unfortunately I don't, but I and plenty of others here will willingly advise if it help you to keep the car.

Oh and anti-freeze...........not rocket science or expensive. At the very least pop down you're local motor factors and buy some and do it yourself. Instructions are on the can. :P

Sounds like Mr mechanic is after the car for himself.........lulling you into thinking its not worth keeping and going to cost too much.  >:( These cars are fairly basic and dead cheap to maintain. You just need the know how..........and there is plenty of that here at this forum to help you.

I used to use GSF car parts but they have gone down hill lateley. Haven't heard too many complaints about Eurocarparts and VW themselves are much cheaper these days.

The coolant has possibly been drained and refilled with water for some reason since last year. Could be for any number of reasons i.e thermostat, water pump change etc. I wouldn't worry too much, be a good idea to get some in there soon as its getting colder now.
