Did look at the R but worry about the insurance after hearing that scumbags will quite happily steal at any cost, plus a porches could be cheaper to insure. Final thought was how much of that performance will I actually get to use? I do agree its a hell of a machine and quite understated.

Where do you live?
The R for me is only £180 a year which is £28 more than a GTI PP!!

The R also works out cheaper if going PCP route.

I posted this in another thread recently. Its the monthly payments.

Deposit £5000

OTR  £26,330    £29,900   £25,765

Term      GTI         R         GTD
x18       £482      £376      £406
x24       £382      £310      £326
x30       £360      £322      £318
x36       £338      £316      £298
x42       £322      £318      £295
x48       £307      £310      £282

I live in Milton Keynes as per signature. Currently paying about £230 a year for business insurance.

Cannot believe the R comes out cheaper, I guess the residual is higher at the end.

Currently own the mark 6 and I think it's better looking than the 7 apart from the lights, which I have to say are as sexy as hell

I made the jump early on as I knew my wife had it in her head we were moving house this year and wanted to do it while I still had a bit of access to my money!!!
I had two mk5's and two mk6's.

Looks - subjective. I prefer the mk7 99% but the wheels look lost in the arches unless you have 19s.
Interior - 50/50; different but the same! The mk7 comes alive at night though! Looks awesome when it gets dark.
Driving - handling in another league up to a point. Still a bit messy at the back if you try a roundabout too fast accidentally at 4:30 am but much less body roll, virtually zero understeer, corners on rails. In fact you can do things you'd never have thought possible in a FWD car a few years ago unless you had a Megane track focussed thing but in comfort.
Power - you won't notice the difference between the 210 and the 230bhp really but the torque is much much better. When mine was new I thought the 258 lb ft was b0ll0cks but once it got past 2500 miles the torque just got stronger and stronger. This is where the GTI scores over the R in some respects - the power comes in nice and low and the car is very flexible.
Ride - Hmmm. The mk6's rode fine on 19's but the mk7 sounds like you've just crashed on certain types of road repairs. On the way back from Gatwick airport on the A303 my passengers were all asleep and I almost was until I hit a bit of repaired road and it made such a loud noise my wife woke up with a start thinking I'd fallen asleep and hit something! And I wasn't going fast either as the traffic was murder. So spec one with DCC. Mine doesn't have it as the mk6 didn't need it so I assumed the mk7 wouldn't after all the reviews; wrong!

But at the end of the day the forums all say that you can have an R virtually for free now so long as you don't pay cash. So why bother with a GTI?

Thanks, I do enjoy the ride in the mark 6, and yet to drive a Mark 7.

Will se what I get quoted next Friday, and probably cry when I get the price to part ex

Nope

Happy with mine for now. When I trade it in it will have to be for something different, not another hot hatch, no matter how hot it actually is.

One thing I really cannot stand on the new Mk7s is the cruise control...I think it's awful, like all the radar systems!

That part of the dilemma for me in that I love the mark 6 GTI, and having had the tensioner done I am not sure the Mark 7 would be worth the extra expense.

Out of curiosity what are you considering next?

You don't have to have it on adaptive cruise. It can be on normal cruise the same as the Mk6!
Although adaptive with DSG is literally the car driving / braking itself.

C3PO I honestly haven't got that far yet. It would depend on my situation, family, work etc. I have a motorbike as well so that's for my ultimate kicks! I'd like to hope that in a few years I'd be looking at something big, german and saloonish, maybe persuading the missus to have a newer hot hatch

P3asa, I didn't realise it could be used like a standard system? The one on the Golf I had as a courtesy car pretty much alternated itself, sometimes it would slow gently, others I'd be reaching for the brake pedal as it realised there was something in front getting closer very quickly!

Once you are used to the adaptive cruise it is fantastic. A bit strange at first though with the car braking for you.
My bad, I thought the other setting on the cruise was standard cruise but its the speed limiter.

That's a shame, I thought there was some hope that a traditional cruise mode would live on! Doesn't matter how good they are though, they can't anticipate of plan, they're just reactive systems. A person can be much smoother and safer when they're in charge of the speed.

I won't trust the systems though. I had a Jag XJ a while back as a company car, and as I was travelling on the m40 around a left hand bend in the fast lane, the car did an emergency stop!! Apparently they sometimes can think that the barrier in that situation can be something in front of the car... I didn't use it again after that!

having spent a bit of time using the adaptive cruise and understanding it i really like it and the benefits of the radar assist even when cruise is not engaged

in the fog the radar was picking up cars when set to max distance in front before i could see them

the cruise with dsg is great as it changes through the gears nicely, in reality the adaptive flashes a warning if it thinks you are going to clout something before applying brakes etc, in slow moving motorway traffic it is just great

loved my 35 but for me the chassis dynamics on the 7 won me over but needs the ed40 to make it special

I hardly ever use the ACC as I don't really drive anywhere most of the time where it would be of any benefit and when I do I can't remember how all of the settings work.
The main thing I can never fathom is whether the radar is doing its thing in city traffic as I have the ACC in 'off' mode I think (I can see total mileage in bottom left of screen which disappears when I use cruise) and the distance warning pops up in the screen when I'm on the motorway and some arse pulls in the gap in front of me but when I'm in city traffic I never get any warnings or automatic braking.
Ahhhh technology; You can have too much choice!
