it's smoky in here..
« on: 09 September 2005, 21:04 »
just been out and opened up the motor a bit.  stopped to fill up with petrol and when i started it back up i got a fairly large cloud of smoke, cut the engine immediately and checked it out.  all fluids are ok, oil has no signs of water, water is not oily (cooloing system flushed on wednesday at the garage).  started back up and a little smoke still coming out but the smoke stopped altogether by the time i got off the garage forecourt.

the engine is operating at the correct temperature, idles perfect, sounds fine but maybe i'm now a bit paranoid as i feel the engine isn't as tight as it was immediately before hand and i feel that i might have lost a bit of power but it still pulls really well.  i splurted some slick 50 in the engine last weekend and tonight was the first time it got any stick since.  could it be some gunk working it's way through??

Could be mate!

Check the crancase breather pipe, it should ahve a gause in side and this mat be blocked, then when you started her up it dislodge the blockage of oil and it just when through the system!

see here - http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=26178.10

Also, syta silver oil is the best and only oil you should use, it's what VW used on the engine in the first place, it's cheap - £12 for 5 liters from gsf, a little more form the dealers! also always use a genuine oil fillter as it has the return stop valve in it!

Hope that helps!

i'll keep you posted

ok i accept that this may turn out to be a dim question..

i checked the crankcase breather pipe and i couldn't find any gauze.  should the gauze be at the engine block end of the hose??

bte, are you still running that "bong" contraption of yours??

Hi, the gause should be half way up! and it should have one! I can taker a pic of mine and you gould make one up by twisting some wire!

Could be why you got a big puff off smoke then!

Not running the bong now :) - got a filter on it - http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=26178.30

for a tenner it's well worth it!

i'd really appreciate a snappy snap if you don't mind!!  i'm not sure if i have found the gauze or not..

there is some sort of foreign object at the air filter end of the pipe which i can't get out at all..

i'm thinking of going for the same set up as you have but in the meantime i reckon i'll need to sort this out for peace of mind at least.

thanks for your help, i really appreciate it..

That's probably the gause :) get some flexible pipe or a coat hanger and ram it out :)

just to let you know that i found that bit of gauze   (hmmmm)  somebody prior had wound a bit of thin wire into a spiral and stuffed it up the pipe!!  might have been as well to not have bothered!!

anyhow, i just ordered the filter from the link you posted so looking forward to fitting that and not chugging up the air filter anymore..

what is the small pipe coming off the knuckle in the middle of the breather pipe for?  i gather i have to connect it up to the new setup.

Hi mate,

well the pipe on the knuckle goes to the inlet manifold breather! do you have the same breather pipe as me?

If not it will be further up, you could just extend it to reach with some tubing, although other people have just capped it off!

did you order the 25mm breather filter? - this is the size that will fit straight over the original pipe!

That small pipe is some kind of vacume. You will either need to keep it connected to the breather or cap it off. If you dont you will get a bad idle.
