The inner splines are all I would usually expect to see. What year is your cabrio? Mine is 1983 so maybe the later one's are different, assuming yours is a later one. If you give me the year,  I'll have a look in the Parts catalogue, see if that sheds any light.

Just tried looking at a 1991 model and that does appear to show an adapter sleeve:-

My guess is yours is the 45mm one. My Mk1 Haynes manual doesn't mention that either. Just going to check my Mk2 Haynes.
At a guess I would think you're going to have to find a way to pull it off, but I'll have a look in my other manuals to see if they shed any light.

My Mk2 manual doesn't help either. AdamB might be able to help. He's got the J reg sportline and I know he's had his steering wheel off.

I think i need a puller but not sure where to get one from. It needs thin fingers to get in between the tight spring. Any ideas where to get a puller from?

Is the steering wheel standard? i think if you have an adaptor on the steering column, then you will need a puller to remove it.

Steering wheel is standard and I think richandhazel is right about a change in design around the '90 spec models. Have heard it may be easier to remove the inner column which would allow me to get at the splined lock washer but don't know if this is an easy job. Anyone done this?
