What did you use as a puller with thin fingers Bdub? The spring seems very strong with little room for movement. Do you have any diagrams? In desperate need of help here!

Here are some instructions for removal on a Mk2 Golf GTI. I'm sure you'll find its the same:-

The ignition switch itself (Item 8 below) sits underneath the lock cylinder. I'm sure you can remove that, in-situ, by removing a screw from underneath.

I've always managed to remove the housing (item 7) without a puller.

I cannot see the lock washer anywhere. Is that the part that has the splines to connect the wheel and steer?

Ah, that might well be a part that is only applicable to the Mk2. Without ripping mine apart I couldn't say for sure but I don't think you have that. Have you got a Haynes manual as I'm sure there is a reasonable write up in there?

I've got a Haynes manual for the mk1 but it's different from mine and doesn't give that good a write up. Really need advice from someone who has done it on a mk1 cabrio before as it seems different to the mk1 and mk2!

Is that some kind of steering wheel adapter on there. That splined bit that the steering wheel engages with looks a lot larger than I've seen before.

The more I look at it, the more I'm thinking thats a non standard adapter on there. You need to work out how to get that adapter off. Are there any grub screws?

There are no grub screws or anything. The splined nut that you see sits on further splines inside. I was thinking about trying to knock this off but not confident as I don't know if it's meant to come off. Don't want to damage any of the splines! As for it being some sort of adapter, I assumed it was standard as the steering wheel is original (the one with the 3" x 5" horn in the centre).
