Lock housing removal?
« on: 21 October 2003, 10:18 »
Can anyone tell me how to remove the housing around the steering column that holds the lock cylinder and ignition/starter switch on a mk1 cabriolet? I have removed the steering wheel and switches but cannot remove the housing unit for some reason. Cannot see what is holding it on. Any help welcome!

Cheers

I took mine off - it was just a couple of screws underneath, then a bit of jiggling and it came right out.
I don't own this anymore - I just can't be arsed to change the picture

Screws underneath where? I have removed the steering wheel nut which lets you remove the wheel, the 3 screws holding the light and wiper switches etc and the bolt on the left hand side of the lock housing but it wont come off. Any ideas?

I presume you are talking about the black plastic cowling around the column? if so - there are a couple of recessed screws on the underside of the lower half. take these out and it should come off.

No, I am talking about the silver housing that you would drill into if you wanted to remove the lock cylinder. I want to remove it as I have a problem with the ignition power supply cutting off unless I hold the key in. The radio and electric hood dont work unless the key is held in and the barrel is pushed in.

I changed mine last year. Just trying to think how the lock and switch mechanism came away from the aluminium housing. I may have to look at one to remind myself.

I've read something about removing a lockwasher from the inner column and removing the spring and contact ring but don't know how this is done. Any help?

I have done this twice on mine to get to the ignition switch mech. The assembly is held on by a bush with an spring behind it. It is a press and splined fit, you need a puller with thin fingers, depress the spring and you can just get the thin fingers in and pull it off ( so to speak ).
