Old member returning to the mk5 Gti, advice
« on: 31 July 2014, 09:49 »
Hello all, old newbie here returning to mk5 gti ownership, sold my 2006 gti back in 2009 to fund purchase of mk1 focus Rs which was a fantastic car but now long sold due to starting family and getting myself onto the property ladder etc

Now in posistion to look at a half decent motor again and have decided that mk5 gti ticks all the boxes, nicely refined, safe for my 9 month old Daughter to travel in and now very affordable

Car im looking at is a totally standard 2008 fully loaded model with around 60k miles and full vw history etc!

Any tips/advice on buying one these days as obviously getting a bit older now so surely some bad bits to look out for!
Cant seem to find a solid buyers guide inless im looking in wrong place!

Thanks in advance and hope to be on here pestering you all a bit more again

Matt

The more specific things to check on a GTI are:

- Rust on the front wings. There's a known issue with rusty wings caused by the inner lining, so check the wings carefully for this. Can be repaired by VW without charge, but most likely will need a 50% contribution to costs.

- Coil pack recall. A quick call to Volkswagen main dealer and they can check the car against the recall list to see it it's done or outstanding.

- PCV. Easy to check, take the dipstick out briefly with the engine on and at idle. If the engine tries to stall, it's all good. If not then the PVC will need replacing (about £100 and an hours work).

Other than that, have a look at the service history and see exactly what's been done. If it's a DSG equipped car make sure the service intervals have been met for the DSG gearbox. Also ensure the water pump and cam belt have been done at least one in the last 5 years or before 60K miles.

Rusty front wings at the top of the wheel arches seem to be a common problem recently

Indeed, but VW tend to be alright, as all cars are offered with a 10 year warranty, so as long as you can show the car is well cared for (regular cleaning and waxing) then they may be convinced to carry out any repairs for free...

Thanks for replies chaps
Went to view a fully loaded 1 owner example last night and apart from rear brakes near end of life and small scuff to front bumper everything else seemed fine oh and floor mate could do with replacing as bit worn/tatty!

Told the guy a be in touch this morn to sort deposit via bank transfer so wish me luck
