DRL's
« on: 25 July 2014, 21:22 »
Hey all,

Through VCDS I can switch the DRL's from the original bulbs to those in the fog lamps. Does anyone know whether this is road legal?

After coding would you still have to switch them on independently of the headlights?.  I think this has a bearing on what are considered to be legal driving lights.  If they are on an independent switch then don't think they can be classed as DRL's.

Additionally are you technically NOT  supposed to use fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced.

I only ask as in VCDS there is an option to use the fog as DRL's. I tested this whilst at home and the main DRL's did switch to fogs but I'm not sure whether this option is legal....................?

I don't see why they would be illegal as many cars use their foglights as DRL's as standard, albeit at a reduced output.

My Passat has separate DRL's with 21W bulbs right next to the foglights. I have recently coded the foglights to be used as DRLs, therefore freeing the original DRL lamps to take a 55W halogen bulb to be used as an extra main beam. Initially I reduced the output down to 60% and they looked more or less the same as the original DRL, but then increased that to 80% just to make them a little brighter.

I did think about doing it on the Golf, but instead just set them so that the corresponding DRL turns off when indicating, like the Mk7 does.

In addition to the legalities of the use of fog lights, what about the static cornering light function? This turns one fog light on at full power in conjunction with the headlights.

My Brother-in-law used to be a copper. He told me that many of his mates that knew little about cars had pulled drivers over for improper use of foglights, when in fact they had been cornering lights. It had to be explained to them that this was a standard feature of many cars, therefore not illegal.

You should be able to dim the brightness of the fog lights. Mine is set to 20% which is far less than some of the blinding standard DRL's you see these days

Ive run my Audi fogs as DRL's for the last 3 years without issue

Thanks for responses, so using the fogs as DRL's (albeit at a lower brightness setting) will pass an MOT?
Also, how can I lower the fog brightness, is this through VCDS as well?

In VCDS where you have the option to select fogs as DRLs, there is a box with the brightness value as a percentage. Type in your chosen value in the left hand box and press Enter, then the usual, Escape followed by clicking Do It
