8v cold air feed / air box modding
« on: 15 July 2014, 11:56 »
I'm gonna do some modding this weekend and I wanna sort out the air flow first , I was thinking of running a cold air feed out therough the lower grill, but I was wondering the best way to do it , my car came with one of those universal induction kits with the cone filter in a big cylinder box thing- will I see more gains by which I mean noise and power if I take the air box out and replace it completely with this aftermarket one and then run a feed pipe out the front - or would I be better modding the air box I've seen some white loads of holes cut in the bottom or some with just one big panel chopped out ? Or maybe a combination of modding the standard air box and then running a fees pipe to that ? I couldn't seem to find a how to guide on the forum so thought I'd just ask !

The best results you'll see are by preventing the heat from the engine getting to the filter while running cold air from outside into the filter. Cone filters are fine but some will argue that they yield little benefit and your better off with an air box.

I run an open filter moved to the very corner of the bay and a large bit of ducting up from the bumper and pointing straight at the filter.  I'll openly admit that I have no idea if it helps at all but hey!

Maybe try and retain the box with yours as it will aid in preventing heat soak. Can it be modded to accept a cold air feed from the bumper?

Cone filters/induction kits are not really suited to our cars. Yes they will increase noise but will do nothing in the way of performance.  Infact you will lose power.

Smooth out the standard airbox of all the rivets etc and remove the trumpet. Stick a K&N panel filter in and run a cold air feed from bottom of bumper.  This has been proven to be the best set up.

I moved the carbon canister to the passenger side, then modded the box as above but increased the original hole to 80mm. I then used the trumpet from the top section to put in the 80mm hole in the bottom half. (Cut trumpet down to 30mm) I then used silicon to seal it together.
I also had a cold air duct to replace the lower grill and used a 80mm hose from that and up where the carbon canister was.

Ah right cheers , I've got a plan for the bottom section of the box and the cold air feed, what needs to be done to the top section of the air box - just smooth it off ?

Was just looking at some photos of the inside I took and the top section has a big trumpet with two fins in - did you cut this out ?
