clonky geachange on an 8v ?
« on: 11 July 2014, 11:58 »
Hi all. This is a new one to me and i'm not sure exactly where to start looking.

Yesterday on my 97 8v gti, with no warning or other issues my gearshift started to knock every time i went into 1st gear.If i pull the cover and gaiter up around the gearshift i can see that it is making the knocking sound where the shaft goes through to the engine bay when i select 1st.It seems to have a rubber washer as a "stop" but although the rubber washer is there it sounds like metal to metal when it goes fully forward.

I'm thinking it may be one or more of the plastic parts that's failed but i'm also wondering if it's a gearbox fault.

All gears select as they should and i have no other problems that i can link this to.

If this sounds familiar to any of you can you let me know your thoughts ?.

Thanks in advance.

Could be the selector fork or the gear itself

All other gears perfect ? Does it ever come out of gear ? The gearboxes In these are terrible and fail for a past time. My bearings went and destroyed the gearbox a few years ago.  It was fine and I slowly lost each gear over a single journey till it failed. It was 400 miles from home too

Thanks for replying.Iv'e had a closer look at it today and it looks like it's this part :-

All gears are good but lever moves too much in each direction, hopefully i will sort it over the weekend.

thanks

My bet is on the bit thag sits on the gearbox with a rubber bush type of ball. Same happened to mine and the bust was totally missing. I got one from gsf. Give me a min il try to find it.

Normally the 'golf ball' bush on the linkage in the engine bay. A kit with all the bits can be had easy ask Boney.
