Ed30 Surging at low revs
« on: 08 July 2014, 17:57 »
Hi guys,

I bought an Edition 30 DSG last monday and found out recently that the RPM surges by around 100-200 at low revs in 1st, 2nd and reverse. Gear changes are smooth apart from every now and again 3rd to 2nd makes a small 'engaging' sound rather than a clunk. This problem only appears when the car is warm.

I have read through many threads about the mechatronics failing so took it to VW inchcape on the wirral yesterday, to which they said...

Carried out road test with customer. Confirmed slight surge forward in 1st and 2nd. Carried out test with master tech, no faults stored in memory of the vehicle. Not believed to be gearbox related - please allow to develop.

Am I right in thinking that VW are, for want of a better word, fobbing me off? The car jerks from a standstill once warm, its practically impossible to get it to drive off smoothly without kangarooing unless you put your foot down. Also in 6th gear at 50mph you can see the rev counter moving up and down slowly like a surge.

Not really sure which route to take as I have phoned the dealer I bought it from and he said 'VW can find no faults so there is nothing wrong with the car'... They will only take a 2nd opinion from a main dealer and won't accept one from the likes of Awesome GTI in Irlam who I was thinking of going to.

I have performed a DSG reset which didn't help whatsoever, I have also tried changing spark plugs but no improvement. Also checked the car with a VCDS but no fault codes being thrown up whatsoever!

I have 6 months warranty on the car but want to get this sorted asap, the limit is only 1k on the warranty. The car has full VWSH, DSG serviced at 43k miles and the car is on 51k

Really appreciate all your replies in advance as I can see this slowly becoming a giant headache.

Thanks

Ian

Fault codes are only as good as what spits them out....

Ask a child why they have a headache, they won't know only that they do. Ask a child if anything is wrong with them and they say no but can have a serious illness. Take them to a doctor and they will check their temperature, blood work etc.... so is actually looking at parameters rather than just asking the kid.....

So fault codes, or their absence, are not ultima ratio. VW should do a logged test drive (measuring blocks would be the magic word in VCDS), then send the data set to Germany where specialists can look at the logged parameters.

thanks for the reply itavaltalainen, I tried to explain this to VW that just because 'computer says no' doesn't mean there isn't a problem. The issue I'm having is that the guy I bought it from is saying "if VW can't find a fault then there is no fault" So I have no grounds to kick up a fuss and all diagnostics now have to be paid for by me.

I rang VW and explained that their answer to my £60 diagnostic fee of "let it develop and get worse" is unacceptable. They have wrote up a full report to send to milton keynes HQ tomorrow so hopefully I get an answer sharpish. I'm convinced its mechatronics but they are unwilling to help or even look at this in any way as he is adamant it isn't the gearbox.

How are clunks, RPM surging on low revs and struggling to reverse up hills not gearbox issues!

Cheers

Ian
