What is your favourite thing about your GTI?
« on: 30 June 2014, 23:23 »
Evening All,

Thought I would start a thread about what people’s favourite thing is about their car - thought it might be something a bit different to the normal BW and advice threads (helpful and interesting though they undoubtedly are).

To kick things off mine isn’t terribly exciting but is pedal feel- I reckon VW have got it spot on where so many manufacturers seem to get it terribly wrong. I think it can make a huge difference to driving enjoyment

I'd agree with that. And the pinpoint steering feel and the slickness of the gear change. I only truly appreciate it after I've driven the wife's Astra lol.

Mostly though, I love how the car looks especially when cleaned in this sunny weather and how it turns heads... even if a lot of my mates would say it's "just a Golf".

In a word versatility

Fact I can cruise down the motorway or into work in comfort but when im alone and the time is right I can grow horns and rag the cr*p out of it :)

(I want more exhaust/engine noise though but with Warranty and PCP I might have to manage without)

Likes:
The alcantara/cloth/leather seat combination.
The engine torque
The styling
The cruise control radar. Drive modes
Park assist 2.0!
Coasting feature of DSG gearbox
The R18 wheels :)

Dislikes (to be fair I am being very picky):
The DSG gearbox is geared uneconomically around 3rd gear. it disengages way too late and fuel consumtion on DSG GTI suffers tremendously.
The DSG cannot engage 6th gear on my tires when driving at the most common speed limit 70 km/h on roads where I drive I need to go 80 km/h.
The Bridgestone Potenza S001 R18 225/40 tyres that are fitted to my car have poor ride, noise comfort, and increased rolling resistance compared to the Continental SportContact 2 that are delivered on some models. As a loan car (GTI 5dr same as mine, both cars without dynamic chassis control) I got to use when my car was in for warranty repair, was fitted with the Continental tyres I could have a direct comparison (No opinion on wear yet though). My Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 spike tyres R17 225/45 have less road noise than the Bridgestone S001 tires (!).

Most complete car that I have driven and already looking at a MK7 GTI PP in 2016 to add to the present GTD.

DSG
DCC
Auto Hold
Styling - The A3 Sportback looks rubbish in comparison. Best lines on 5 door you can get IMO and to this day the car still gets lots of looks.
Performance/Economy Balance
The DRL, the dancing xenons and rear clusters.
Heated Seats
All the little things that are just right in controls, positioning, lighting, interior quality and only really appreciate if driven another brand for a while such as an Astra.
Like the ACC works well but would not pay for it over other options but do like fact there is passive front assist working away and for that alone it should remain a standard.

Dislikes

Media System - Not so much a dislike really as does work fine in reality but the OS has plenty of room for improvement.

Wish List

The Alcantara half leather option in UK
Heated Windscreen as part of winter pack and not with added requirement of additional ariel.
Sports & Sound Pack on GTD (which is available now but not when I specced the car)

The power surge when I put my foot down and the quick steering. Coming from Honda the manual gearbox is good but not the best. The Honda gears shifted as though there was nothing connected to the lever, snick, snick.

I love the all round ability of it, the ride comfort (with ACC), the gearbox, the mid-range torque of the engine, the lovely steering... I love the gadgets too, reversing cam, keyless go, nav, media system.

The thing I love the most is how it integrates so well in to my life by being a very comfotable GT type car one minute, then by sticking it in Sport mode it turns into an agile B-Road stormer.

Dislikes: Tyres, I find that it spins up and traction control cuts in when full throttle, straight road in 2nd/3rd gear on anything less than the perfect surface, worse when exiting a bend (non-PP car), and getting the power down in the wet out of a turn is very tricky. I will be changing to a different tyre as soon as these are worn.

I find that after the stop/start system has 're-started,' it holds on to the brakes a little longer than I would like (Auto-Hold always deactivated in my DSG car as I like the 'creep') so setting off becomes a bit jerky sometimes. This is inconsistent, sometimes it holds, sometimes it doesn't.

The starter motor noise isn't very evocative and sounds a bit cheap... I know it requires to start quickly due to the stop/start but my brother-in-law has an M135i and it's much nicer.

Cosmetically, I love it. I love my 3-door TR car, and it's the right combo for me. The only thing I DON'T like is the standard 18" Austin wheels. I love the design overall, but I really don't like the black inners. Maybe it's just my detailing side, but they never look clean enough (coated from new with a ceramic sealant) and even after being very careful, they're already starting to look a little dull from the soft brushes I'm using to clean. I'd much rather have all silver wheels.

Overall, it's a great ownership package and I'm really pleased with it after 4500 miles.
MK7 GTI 3-Door DSG, Tornado Red, Discover Nav, Winter Pack, ACC, Keyless Go, Reversing Camera, Service Pack... Ordered 28th Oct... Collected 1st March!

I love that its not the new Mini my better half wanted!

I love that its not the diesel Passat Sport Estate I drive for work

I love that its as comfortable as the Passat but so much better to drive

I live that at 50 I can get away with driving it without looking like a guy having a mid life crisis but that people "in the know" take notice of it.

I love that it has great residuals so I can justify running it as my wife's car and my weekend toy in one!

The torque from the engine is amazing, my 2 boys complain it hurts there backs.
