Very Strange Electrical Problem - Please Help!
« on: 27 June 2014, 10:29 »
Hi guys!

I have a very strange issue on my golf, its a mk3 2ltr abf 3 door for reference.

With the ignition off, if I indicate right, after a few seconds the windows go down.
With the ignition off, if I put the lights on, after a few seconds the windows go down.
With the lights on, if I put my windows down, you can't put them back up until you turn the lights off.
With the lights on, if I lock the car, thats it its locked until the lights are off!

Learned that last one the hard way I'm afraid - ended up getting recovery to break in!

Thanks guys

Gone through any big puddles lately or has it been driven in heavy ran?
 Could be a bad earth.

The two main ones are the best place to start! Starter motor  (earths)

have you checked the wiring going between chassis and door? Big rubber grommet thing inside that

I don't think anyone has ever complained about this on a Mk3, its a very strange one.

Three things you mention, ignition, windows, lights.
I'd try the following if you haven't already.
Check all your fuses - check your fusebox for any moisture or water leaks. Maybe remove a select few relays to check for dodgy pins.
Disconnect the light switch, test the car - reconnect it.
Disconnect the ignition switch plug, test car - reconnect it.

Have you got an alarm currently fitted or maybe an old alarm fitted that isn't in use any more? If you are not sure then check for any non-standard wiring under the glovebox and steering wheel. If you do have an alarm I'd find a way to disable it. The Toad Ai606 for example can control the windows, locks and lights. If an alarm unit is faulty it could possibly cause you the same issues.

My old mk3 used to randomly open its windows and or sunroof when you locked it with the button sometimes

Pain in the ass when you don't notice at night, flooded the sodding car

Oh and I never found out why so that's no help haha

Someone fitted an immobiliser, a Centurion one, and I'm not sure how to take it out because if you simply unplug it the car won't start, so maybe the ECU needs telling? There has been some serious meddling done under the dash but I have checked that its all removed and correctly undone. I think I checked the ignition and lights being unplugged and don't think it solved it. My next idea is dodgy PCB's on the window motors, messing everything up? Off to scrappy's
