Updated list of best Phones to use with MK7 ?
« on: 26 June 2014, 08:07 »
Hi guys, just a quick question please. It looks like my old friend - my 3 year old Iphone 4s is about to bite the dust (battery is only lasting a few hours and it keeps locking up and re-booting itself as well as the well documented sticky home button). Shame really as it was a really good reliable phone, and much better than the entry level HTC crap my company gave me (it's basically a works mobile - but they own the Sim, I own the handset). I'm not an Apple fanboy, so quite happy to look at alternatives. We are on the Orange/EE network.

That being the case, I'm currently looking at alternatives both Apple and Android (which I've never used before). One of the little things that does bug me about the Iphone, is that on my lovely Discover Nav Pro head unit, it only shows place holders for contacts and not the photos. There used to be a list that VW did (think it's probably out of date now), that listed which phones were compatible with certain options in the Golf. Please bear in mind, whilst I have the Discover Nav Pro, I don't have Advanced Phone package installed (just standard bluetooth).

That being the case, anyone any recommendations for a good solid phone to pair with the GTD ? My phone requirements are (in no particular order - some of which the 4s isn't great at anyway).

Good sharp clear Screen.

Must work seamlessly with Microsoft Outlook Exchange (a must for work emails).

Must have GPS facility.

A decent camera (as when on site I use the phone for images all the time - but so long as it's as good as the 4s, anything better would be a bonus).

I do use the 4s quite a bit as my music jukebox when cycling and travelling, so a good music player would be a bonus.

Decent Battery life (by decent I don't mean a week, just at least a full day maybe two - again, as good as the 4s was)

I have quite a few movies on the 4s for when I'm travelling (again) so would be nice to have a decent movie player built in.

Standard 3.5mm Headphone socket (I have my own favourite in ear headphones that cost me a fortune).

Storage - My 4s is 64GB and it's normally about 80% full (photos, music, movies, apps etc), so the replacement must either be at least this size, or be user expandable via something like Micro SDXC cards to at least 64gb (if beyond then the more the better).

And obviously, must work with the MK7, and preferably show contact pictures (might as well if I'm changing).

Whilst I'm asking, as an Android virgin, would I actually miss anything going over to this platform from IOS ? Obviously I know I couldn't access e.g. Itunes, but I assume Android has it's own music and movie download app ? I don't want something the size of a mini tablet. Ideally something about the same size (or a little larger) than the 4s would be preferable, however I understand the Galaxy 5 is pretty much state of the art but much bigger ? Would I actually get used to this form factor or is it a pain to carry about ?

Thanks in advance.

I have had quite a few andriod phones with no issues. At the moment i am using a HTC one mini but this is no good to you due to capacity. I have used previous model iphones and think you won't miss much if i'm honest.

Take a look at this site, appears to be very current as it has the iPhone 5s on it amongst other new phones and it has a specific row for 'contact pictures'.

Hi sootchucker, I've got an Android phone (Nexus4) and an iPhone 5s from work - I never use the iPhone, and the Nexus is 18 months older! Only thing I use the iPhone for is the camera, which is very good. So I don't think you will miss iOS if you make the switch (and once you readjust!)

I would recommend the Nexus 5 to you but it's capped at 32Gb, the Nexus 6 should be out later this year so I would imagine that would be 64Gb. It depends if you want contract or 'buy a phone and sim only contract', with the Nexus I pay £12 a month after £240 initial outlay so it can work out pretty cheap over 2+ years, although Google have recently bumped their prices a bit.

HTC M8 which I've got ticks all them boxes mate. Great for contact photos too, as it syncs with your facebook or twitter (if you let it) so your contact photos are automatically downloaded.

Only downside I have with it is that sometimes I struggle to charge it as the USB mode goes a bit funny when the cable is plugged directly into the media unit. Can't figure it out but it seemingly locks up the head unit until it is unplugged.

I had a Galaxy S4 for a week and hated it so went back to a 5s, i can see the appeal of Android phones but the S4 was a bit fussy for my taste and it seems i'm not a big fan of phones with big screens and not being able to reach all four corners with one hand!

The images did work on the VW head unit but on the flip side it uses the rubbish preset ringtones instead of whatever you've got on the phone.

I'm happy with my 5s, does everything except show photos on the stereo.
