vr6 chain guide
« on: 22 June 2014, 18:12 »
Is there any way of identifying if my engine has a single chain or double without removing the mani and rocker?

Doing my head gasket next week, got a head all cleaned, skimmed ect ready to swap and it makes sense to do the guide whilst they're coming off anyway :)

1993 Vr on what I'm lead to believe is a 2.9 engine (can't confirm), and is obd2 if this helps

Thanks

If its obd2 then deffo single chain. I got mine from KMS its made by febi and cost me £138 or so. Its a full kit. Comes with 3 guide rails. A tentioner inside the engine and a tentioner bolt which goes throught the back top of chain cover. And 2 chains. The guide i used was from vwvortex and i managed to do it so that means that guide is fool proof. Lol

also inspect your crank seal. Replace if need be. I got mine from tps for 30 odd quids.

also you will need 2 3mm plates to lock the cam and some tipex or white marking pen.

2.9 is OBD-1 though and 93 leads me to think OBD-1 too. I had a 93 and that was deffo OBD 1.

Apparently its a 2.9 but I'm yet to back this up, I know 'atleast' my rocker is AAA but could of been transferred since it has been polished

Anyway I'm old school obd1 then, should of realised this when I've clearly cleaned the TB haha, serves me right for going off the coilpack

Not after doing my chains, only swapping heads over so my car is off the road during a weekend. May as well do my guides
