Stiff gears! Will grease help?
« on: 20 June 2014, 20:58 »
I have a golf mk4 1999 s 1.4. The gears are extremely stiff I am currently a learner driver so this is difficult for me. The main gears that are stiff are 1st and 2nd. I have seen a few people on different sites saying they have sprayed or rubbed grease on the gears under the bonnet. Has anyone done this and it has worked? If so what grease do you use and how do you do it? Thanks

You can see some of the joints in the linkage from under the bonnet. I sprayed mine with spray grease (as this is thin and penetrates) and this made gear selection a bit easier and smoother.

But I think you need to look in to adjusting your gearchange mechanism. It sounds like more than a bit of spray grease is needed.

Spray grease is a modern wonder. It goes on like plus gas or WD40 so it penetrates. But then the solvent evaporates and you are left with normal, proper grease.

It works well for door hinges, gear linkages, bike chains, motorbike brake lever pivots etc etc.

Where abouts do you get it from? Does it matter what brand etc?
