It's amazing your front rim is not damaged as it probably hit the object first

Why does the OP say he would have been buggered had the car been on runflats? Surely they would actually have improved the situation as he could have driven on then made repair at a safe and convenient location.

Because you can only drive 50 miles at 50 mph on them and he had further to go before he could get a new one fitted?

I had a puncture on a runflat at 10.30pm at night 200 miles away from home, had to stay the night in a hotel as no space saver to get me home. Then found next day no run flat of right size in stock anywhere locally (this was a 3 series BMW back in 2006/7) and so had to leave the car and get a train home.

wont buy a car without a spare of some description these days!

Had an email from the dealer earlier, new wheel with balanced tyre will be available fro 14:00 tomorrow

Dealer advised me there is no distance limit on the space saver but only has 3mm of tread so limited in that sense, also incredibly noisy, looks awful and have to drive like Miss Daisy! But will get me through a few days of commuting.

I do think this sort of damage would have happened regardless of manufacture, would make an interesting test for the Mythbuster brothers! Bit like the frozen chicken test on cockpit windows.

As i was driving in a straight line  I think the front wheel must have run over it first and kicked up the offending lump which hit the rear tyre awkwardly, something had to give at that speed.

First time in 24 years anything like this has happened....we all need to keep a good look out for debris and pot holes, safe driving everyone

Standard stock item   Everything is ordered overnight or two days lead time now. They order on demand and keep very little in stock.
Ok ok, I should have said standard central stock item with overnight delivery

This is a regular occurrence with large wheels with low profile tyres.

Wow, it beggers belief that this can happen nowadays. So that's you and the R driver in Oz, hope VW are taking notice?

Really ?, thats two incidents only and both hit objects at high speed.
