STOP! But why?
« on: 17 June 2014, 15:15 »
I did a search on 'STOP' and found an old oil pressure thread which was an interesting read, but I can't be a 100% I've got the exact same problem.

I have a 2003 MKIV Gti with 70k on the clock. My problem seems to be getting steadily worse. Basically when parked on a hill, or travelling slowly down a hill, the dash warning light flashes 'STOP'. Yet there seems to be nothing wrong with the car.

I did mention this at a recent service - blank faces. No other warning lights come on - not oil, so I'm a bit non plussed as to what may be the cause.

Any advice warmly welcomed.

Not as yet. Water level low, got to be water related I'd think.

Scanned for fault codes?

I don't have any wizzy kit on site. Only garage I trust and take the car to is a Suzuki dealership. Not sure if the'd have the right kit.

Where do you live? There might be someone near you with Vagcom.

I'd top the coolant up as a starting point.

Are you sure there are no other warning lights?

And do you know about the blocked oil pick up problem on the 1.8s? I have read a few tales of this and damage is not far away if this is your problem (i.e. you get away with it only a few times before the rattles start).

I do hope you are right. If it is the water level sensor it is a cheap(ish) fix.

There is a main dealer in Harlow, I fear their prices. Needs must though, if it came to it.

I did top up the coolant.

That's the strange thing, the 'STOP' sign is all that I see and I've only ever seen that before when the water pump went the first time.

I have read about blocked oil breathers etc. Mine is a two litre btw.

Well after topping up the coolant and checking for blocked hoses, the warning light came on again this morning in the Aldi car park, but I did notice the handbrake warning light come on also.

So it MUST be brake fluid level low?

Check the brake fluid level. Not sure if this is connected or not, but I have both front wheel bearings done. Got a guy to do it as I don't have a press.

On each occasion, As soon as I got into the car and drove , it flash STOP once, I stopped, turned car off/on and it was fine.

THis is the only time I have had "stop" apprearing without any other info.

As previously advise dget is scanned as soon as.

One of the brake indicator lights does come up if the fluid is low. Easy one to check and cheap to fix. Please post back if it is that so future readers will benefit.
