Wheel offset & spacers

So, my bro has finally agreed to let me spend his money on some mods for his pp GTi. I have one question; the wheels he's chosen have an offset of 42 and I think that the factory 19"s have an offset of 51' so what size spacers will I need to sit his wheels flush with the arches?

The final list is:-

Non oem 19"s - I'll let you know once it's done so you can pass comment 
Spacers
Eibach pro spring kit
Bcs power valve exhaust

The plan is to try and get it done before inters.

I'm running 8x19 ET44 with 235 tyres on standard suspension and the fronts sit quite flush but the rears look like they could possibly take another 5 or 6mm offset (spacer).
However when the car is loaded fully (lowered!) the rear tyre actually sits quite close to the arch so it could be just the styling of the mk7 making it look like the wheels are too inset(?).
I'd suggest fitting the wheels and springs first then looking to see of you can get spacers in there still.
I'm guessing 8mm are the smallest hub centric size.

Just the man I was hoping to answer this! I'll pass that on as it's a good point about lowering if forms then seeing about the spacers.

The other thing to consider is the width of the replacement wheels. For instance, the standard 18s are 7.5" wide with a 49mm offset. I'm looking at getting some 8.5" wide replacements with 45mm offset which will 'poke' an extra 17mm.

Mine are the equivalent of running 11mm spacers on the Austins.
So the extra 17mm poke will be accommodated ok at the arse end Gnasher but the front's might poke a bit unless you like stretched tyres and masses of wheel camber!
The BBS's could well be coming off mine soon so I'll be experimenting with spacers myself in the near future!
