I had a a4 avant and had endless electrical problems. Car was great but this put me off. And the sh!te oil consumption that audi say is normal to put in 1 litre in every 500/1000 miles on a new engine!
Bmw spend more on this department  and doesn't have many issues

Thanks all.  We've decided on the Golf actually.  BMW was much smaller in the back in comparison.  We have two kids so space is pretty important.  I thought the Bimmer seats were comfortable, but obviously that was only a short test drive.  That was another thing that put her off as we travel to Plymouth and Bristol quite often to see family.  The Bimmer was also quite restrictive in view and she didn't feel as comfortable driving it.  We're gonna look for a GTD privately thats within our budget now.

Thanks again for your input everyone.

Yeah out of the two for what you want the golf is more suited.
If I was to choose a bmw for family and long journeys it would have to be a 5 series,  so much room and comfort.
