Mk6 Golf TDI 140, or BMW 118D M Sport?
« on: 07 June 2014, 20:39 »
As above. Looking for a new daily as the Saab is on its last legs. Bearing in mind the wife will be the main driver, and she had her heart set on the Golf. That is, until I pulled her over to look at the Bimmer. She's now in a mood as I've complicated things!
Both are around the 11k mark, and she's found pros and cons with both. The only issue I have is that it'll obviously be used to ferry the kids too, and having never driven a RWD car in the rain, is it really an issue unless your giving it beans? (Obviously she wouldn't be doing that with the kids in though). She prefers the fact the Golf has touchscreen dab radio with the ultrasonic parking screen, but prefers the interior trim and class of the BMW, although visibility isn't great. She's undecided on which she prefers on the exterior, but thinks the "sporty look of the BMW makes it look a bit like a blokes car". Anyone got any experience of both, Or either would be good. General opinions welcome too.
I just think the Golf looks a bit well, boring in standard form.......................

Cheers all!

The Golf would be my choice, the BMW is just too cramped inside.

I hired the bmw and found the m sport seats crippling over a long drive also very cramped as per Waynes comment. Very nice to drive but you need to be short and built like a racing snake to be comfortable.
Did give it some and found it to be predictable and sure footed. Think they look hideous in hatch back form, saloon looks nice though.
The golf is nothing special but much more comfortable if a little dull, although it felt quicker and did not have run flats to make it jittery on bumps

What about a GTD? Can be had for similar money due to there being quite a few about now looks a little bit more special than the GT.
Currently pootling around in our family wagen, a Tiguan SEL 😂

Had a mk5 Gt Tdi about 5 years ago so would kind of be a step back, even in gtd form for that, and the mk6 gtd is a bit beyond our budget for one with decent mileage. 11k is our absolute top.

GTD is an awesome car, well worth the cash.
My boss has one, with a slightly iffy paint job courtesy of me stuffing it :lipsrsealed:

I've gone from vw to bmw and im a big fan of the build quality etc of the bmw, but for what you want get the golf.

I would recommend looking at the f10 520d

I've had both, assuming that you wont be going everywhere at full chat, the car that I would have hardest time walking away from after lets say a year, would be the BMW, its just a far better car!

Having said that, 11k would buy you a very nice Audi A4 Avant S-Line, which I've also had, and just sold on to make way for an A6 Avant, the A4 for me was the most user friendly and practical out of the 3... loads of room etc, but not actually a "big" car, and great to look at!
