Engine Light
« on: 07 June 2014, 18:53 »
Had my MK6 GTI since last June and absolutely love it.

Recently the engine light came on, so looking at the manual it said "fault in the catalytic convertor" I booked it in to the garage to be told it was £100 just for them to plug it in.  anyway, the light went off a few days later and I cancelled the garage and  completely forgot about it. After filling up at the petrol station when I started the engine the light came on again.

Anybody on here have any suggestions as to what this could be, and why the light went off and has came back on again?

Cheers

Cheers for the reply. I've read a few other forums from Googling and nothing too serious came up so hope it is what you say.

Based in Aberdeen. I'll probably take it to the garage. Doubt that will be covered under my service pack eh?

Mattyj's right get a reader from Amazon they're £26. It's a Vgate scanner and it does all vag cars. The OBD port is above your right leg. If you boggle(Scottish word) look you'll see a purple plug. It's well worth the money. Then you wont become a slave to the garage. Mind when you first plug it in...stand well back for a big orangle flash and lights and horns going mental....AM KIDDING
Audi S1 gone, awaiting 1.5tsi r-line, pan roof, led lights front and rear, active dash, 18" jurva alloys and a dealer fitted Oettinger roof spoiler in tornado red.

Haha cheers mate. Might do that, is it a code it comes up with or does it tell you specifically what the problem is?

Yeh, usually gives a description and you can further check things out in a Haynes techbook..OBD-11 electronic and engine management systems, it helps.

Quick update on the fault. Took it in to VW the other day and they said it was the flap ceasing on the inlet manifold. Was quoted about £637 parts & labour. Guy said he would ask if there was any good will warranty they could do. He called back later that day with great news. They'll cover 100% of the parts I just need to pay for labour @ £290.

He said you should have noticed a loss in power. But I've not noticed anything at all?

Is this a known problem and that's why VW are covering it?
