Door key barrel swap?
« on: 05 June 2014, 21:39 »
Hi all!!... Soooo as always the clue is in the title! I'm wondering if there's a key barrell 'upgrade' as such for the mk2. Since a fellow golf owner showed me that his keys could open my doors its got me slightly worried about the security of my car. Apart from going down the route of fitting a solenoid of sorts, I was wondering if there's other key barrels on the market for the mk2 that use a more modern key? I suppose if someone is going to try and break in to my car, if they really want to they will, I just want to make it as hard as possible for them to do so! If anyone has any other ideas of making the doors more secure, or have a tried and tested ingenious method,  please do share!! Don't want my car to end up being another statistic!! As always, thanhs in adv

De lock and remote proofs the locks/handle/boot from old keys and screw drivers.
Unfortunately there are a million ways to get into an old car like a Mk2.
Invest in a good alarm/immob and park it somewhere safe like a drive or garage when at home or a well lit and camera covered park.

If they want to get in, they'll get in. If they try the locks first and get straight in, at least they won't damage anything else. If the locks are too hard to get through, there will be a big screw driver chewing up the door behind the handle next. Now that will make a mess, meaning you'll need a new door or those nasty armour door plates.

What you need to do is insure that it cant be driven away. A big visible steering wheel lock will hopefully get them to move on to another easier target.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Steering wheel!?! What steering wheel   fitted a quick release steering wheel to put of potential twoka's!! Steering wheel sleeps under my pillow  It's more about the contents of the vehicle. In the long run tho suppose an easy break in is better than a new door, or window, as the contents are covered!!
