GTD Dashboard Rattle
« on: 05 June 2014, 18:59 »
Took my GTD in for its 9,300mile(?) service today, suprised by the ECU update and then asked the dealer to look into a dash rattle between 1700 and 2000RPM in all gears. Went to collect it tonight and unfortunately it's not come home with me as it's having a week long holiday at the dealers whilst they remove the dash to try and find the problem  It's bound to rattle after that!

Had a quick look through the forum and can't find a similar thread. Has anyone else had this problem? The sound actuator in my car doesn't seem to do much in sport mode so I wonder if it is related?

In the meantime I'm wobbling around in a Move UP!

I had a rattle/buzzing sound from mine when new but it disappeared over the first 1500 miles. Inspect your car thoroughly upon pickup, I had a horrible experience with a MK5 when it was new.

Mine was doing it from new, got them to check it at 200 miles but it didn't do it for them, so being lazy I couldn't be bothered to make a special trip  to get them to sort it.

I'm just hoping it doesn't come back with loads of more serious rattles/problems.

I must be jinxed as our other car, a Fabia VRS had to have a new engine last year under warranty at 17,000 miles.

I was experiencing a very annoying vibration which often sounded as if it originated in the dash and then travelled through the passenger door. It was worse when in Sport mode which was really frustrating as I like the engine profile in Sport.
I took it to the dealer who knew of no tpi's and suggested removing the dash! I wasn't prepared to let this happen and was close to removing the rain tray and check to see if the actuator was loose or if some cabling had come loose.
Anyhow, I thought I might randomly investigate the sunglasses storage and after opening and closing the door a few times the sound disappeared!!
I had experienced this for six months and had given up thinking i would just have to live with it and not use sport mode but it has been silent since!!!

Maybe investigate this storage as the windscreen is used to generate the sound and this is in contact with the windscreen. I hope you get it sorted either way because it is annoying and ruins the refinement.

Thought I'd seen it mentioned on here somewhere before!

Oh well, I'll see what it's like when it comes back. Fortunately it went to the dealers in perfect condition with not a spot of dirt or mark on the inside. Normally I'd get a bit precious about them taking out the dash, but hey life's too short:)

I don't get a rattle ( like the one in the youtube vid ) but I get a type of electric buzzing sound for a minute or two after the ignition has been switched off. Think it may have something to do with the radio. Quite annoying. Am I the only one ?

What was the ECU update? Any improvements? My GTD has really come alive since hitting 9K.

Had this rattle on my 7 R ,under load low revs ,marble rolling around sound ,sometimes buzzing , Crewe VW sorted it
the actuator (there are different types ) was loud then went to a sort of broken sound .
The cure , remove the sound actuator from the bulkhead and Insulate it and refit , It's not as loud or harsh and no rattles ,
however with the screen acting as a big speaker I have had some weird sounds all cured by checking for loose stuff in
the cabin which all turns into dash sounds ,like 5x £1 coins in the bottom of a cup holder centre console fine for 500
miles on the rubber mat ,then put a can of pop on top tight in the holder and you get 20 Morris dancers performing
behind the dash   other things CD in glove box ,seat not fully locked on slides ect ect ...   .
It is possible on some models to turn the actuator down via VW plug in settings , hope this helps guys .
Save your dash if I were you
