1.8 NA Engine issue
« on: 05 June 2014, 15:41 »
Hi,

Just had Cambelt and water pump changed on my 1.8 NA 'GTi'. Now the revs drop when pulling away (nearly stalls but stops itself) and car is extremely hesitant at around 3k rpm which it wasn't before. I think they've timed it up wrong but garage won't admit it, coming back with a vague response of 'valve issues'. The car still revs all the way to redline but as i say it's not the same as before it went in for the work. Can anyone offer any guidance?

Thanks,
Matt

Get the car scanned, could be crackshaft position sensor or the timing is a tooth out. Get it scanned

Diagnosis is coming back as the timing chain (under the rocker cover) is a tooth out. They are wanting upwards of £200 to rectify this. Is this something that could have been caused by the Cambelt work as I don't feel I should pay for it if it's their fault. Like I say, car was fine pre-garage work...

F**k paying for that again (pardon my French). Timing chains do not slip out of alignment. THEY cocked that up. THEY pay for it. Approach it sensibly and calmly to start, if they refuse to fix it free, refuse to move the car and seek the right advice.
I thought Volkswagens were supposed to be reliable?
