checking if ignition switch works or not
« on: 05 June 2014, 00:29 »
before I change my starter (will do this soon) I want to check my ignition switch to see if it is working....I already have a replacement switch so was wondering if I can take the cover off of the hazard light and find the plug for the ignition switch disconnect it and then connect the new switch and see if the car will start on the new switch. this is with the old switch sstillin place...this was done on my b4 Passat as it is difficult to replace so the new switch was the tester to see if the old switch was working...luckily it was working....:).
...can Ido the same test on the mk3 golf by plugging in the new switch iinto the connector..then insert the key and turn it to deactivate the immobiliser and test the new switch with a screwdriver? would save me removing the old switch if it is not faulty ....

sound like it is possible? plus won'thave to take off the steering wheel totest the switch...:)

you can go into the central electrics box with a multimeter and see if it works (tricky thouhg) but connecting the other switch won't.
