Front wheel bearing?
« on: 03 June 2014, 18:51 »
A little history: About ten days ago i started hearing slight rubbing, binding, sqealing sound from o/side front. Got worse as the week went on and sound increased while turning left. Checked brake disc/pads and found uneven wear on inside surface of disc. (half shiney half rusty)

Decided to change pads and disc's over weekend but made no difference to above problem.
Took the weight off the o/side front wheel and found slight play while holding wheel at this angle:               <----->

Any advice as it looks like a big job on the front drive and dont wanna start unless i'm sure.

Thanks in advance.

I am fairly handy with spanners and have dome my share of wheel bearings but I have seen enough how tos to know that I will not be tackling the front ones on mine (or my previous A4).

I will be buying complete hubs when mine need doing. ECP have the fronts at £51 each side (half price) at the moment.

Wheel bearing check 12 and 6 not 3 and 9, could be tie rod at 3/9 and even ball joint at 12/6.

You sure no caliper sticky or shield touching somewhere?

Any rumbles on motorway?

Movement not as bad @ 12-6 worse @ 9-3.

Jacked wheel off ground and runs freely both ways without catching, grating or squealing.

Surely loose tie rod or ball joint would not cause wining/sqealing, more of a rattle or judder?

No rumbles on nice straight roads, just squeak increases when going round left bend

But thanks for feedback, more please ev1
