optimax v ultimate
« on: 20 October 2003, 12:32 »
I've just run a tank full of the new BP fuel through the car.
I've been using only optimax for 3 or 4 months now, and thought it was the mutts, but this BP fuel seems pretty good.
It was a bit more expensive to fill up, and didn't seem to give quite the mpg I was used to - however I s'pose I was giving it a bit more right foot to see if it was any good. And the initial feeling is whayhey!!!.
It seemed a bit quicker on acceleration, and felt a bit faster all round.
This is first impressions, so I may be a little bit influenced in wanting it to be good. But, I'll keep you informed as to how it goes after a couple more fill ups

I work for BP and we haven't got the new fuels in yet in our garage, but my boss told me about it. What's the octane rating in it? Optimax was 1 more than the previous Super Unleaded we sold.

I'm not too sure, it never said on the pump, or in the garage. But I've heard anything from 97 to 100 RON.
Let me know if you find out

BP ultimate id meant to be 100RON, but ive heard talk that the UK version is only 98RON and the 100RON is for the continent

optimax was 98RON

i guess you can always check the RON rating at the pump when you go to fill up

Yeah stick with Optimax.

Better still come to Germany and fill up with V-Power 100RON!

I've nearly finished my first tank of Ultimate (in Hazels Audi) and to be honest I think I'll be sticking with Optimax. The car 'appears' to run better on the Optimax.
I've done quite a lot of tinkering with her car, trying to get it running at its best. To get it running well on 95RON it pinks like hell, however, if I retard the ignition timing until the pinking stops, it runs like sh!t. The best way round it was to use the higher octane Optimax and adjust the ignition timing until it stopped pinking (which was a little more advanced than on the 95RON)........and its been running great like that for a few months now.
Using BP's Ultimate, I noticed its starting to pink again, not as bad as 95RON.........but its definitely worse than using the Optimax.
Wish we could get the V-Power 100RON that Herr_Doktor mentions.  :(

If only!

P.S. Depending on your ignition system (I'm no Golf mechanic) you may well need to adjust it to get the benifit of good fuel so just changing fuel for a tank isn't a good way of judging...

I'm going back to optimax, BP was ok for a substitue, but it's not going to be my first choice now
