Rust?

Hi, 

i'm looking at buying a Golf GT TDI, not a new one but one from around 2004 to 2007.

I keep reading about MK5's going rusty on the wings and underside, especially 2005 diesels, is this right? which years should i avoid?

Are MK4's better built? i had several MK4's as company cars and thought they were great, i'm not sure whether to look for a MK4 or a MK5??

Can anyone give me some advice? please

ive never had a mk5 , just 3 and 4s , my bro has had 4s and now hes got a mk5 , and he say mk4s are alot better built than mk5s

I used to have MK4's and always thought they were excellent cars.

After looking at dozens of MK5 golfs and speaking to people i realised that the MK5's don't seem as good at the MK4.
Most seem to get rust on the front wings where the rust eats through from the inside, and they don't seem to have the feel of a VW. I saw loads for sale at dealers with rust appearing on the wings of 07 plate cars.

So i bought an 03 plate MK4 1.9 TDI 100, no rust at all, might be older but i think it's better.

My mates mk5 had had no issues at all, obviously some have so give it a real good look over

I wouldn't get a mk4,  it's the worst car I've ever owned,  fell to bits, felt heavy and slow and wasn't nice to drive IMO

If you search the web i think you will find endless info on the MK5 rust problems, particularly the front wing production faults.
After speaking to VW mechanics and bodyshops i've been put right off MK5.  in comparison to the MK4's i think they are cheaply made and rubbish.


I think the MK4 is heavier because it's not made of rusty biscuit tin metal like the MK5's,

again i would agree ,the mk4 build quality is better ,my friend is an independent vw specialist ,and he says mk5s arnt a patch on mk4s mechanically either.
