Although it appears impressive, I think that the bottom line is that VW get a big slice of the action (money) out of any insurance claims.

That's how I read it when I got my "reminder" from VW UK, months ago. VW approved repairer is not necessarily a sign of quality. I had Benfield royally screw up a repair on my MK5 Golf.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Too true. I'd never go with anyone that wouldn't let me use my preferred bodyshop.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I had this in a email from VW inviting me to join up,what you need to be aware of is the small print in your insurance documents, most insurance companies will charge you more for your excess and not provide a courtesy car if you dont go with their recommended repairer.
Golfgti build quality is average at best.

If you have a tame repairer, the excess can often be lost with some creative accountancy. I never bother adding a courtesy car to my policy as if the worst was to happen, I have a couple of spare cars to use.
