Do I need a new knock sensor?
« on: 31 May 2014, 23:51 »
I've got a GTI 8v 1.8 1990/H Engine code PB.

The housing of the knock sensor got cracked and I don't know if I need a new one or if I can put some sort of sealant around the sensor.

On this thread [http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=132875.msg1191405#msg1191405] the part number was given as
054905377G. When searching for this, the closest match on the list of compatible vehicles was this one: 1990-1992 Volkswagen Golf GTI 16v. Does the 16v GTI use the same sensor as the 8v GTI?

Thanks

The one on my car has the following numbers:

0261231013 - Bosch number
053905377 - VW number

Is this a good replacement as I see it's more available:

054905377G

Thanks

Seems like most knock sensors at this age are starting to fall apart. Does anyone know how much a new one would be off the top of thier head?

VW Heritage have this on ebay:

 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MK2-GOLF-Knock-Sensor-Golf-Mk2-Gti-8v-16v-740mm-green-check-size-/181410944098?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2a3cef5462

or GSF  929VG0290 is either £25.50 or £45, depending on quality.

Around £45 at CarParts4less or Eurocarparts....

The difference in those two VW Heritage ones seems to be in the cable length.  A phone call to VWH would clarify the issue.

The final letter in the part numbers is often just to indicate that the previous part has been superseded; tiny modifications which have no practical relevance are always taking place.

My guess is that if the connector plug is the same colour as your original, and the cable length is the same, then it will be suitable.

This is the reply from my local VW:

"The difference between the Part Numbers that you have given me is that 054905377A is a 740mm Knock Sensor with harness, suitable for PL, PF and RV engines between 1986 and 1989 (or 1993 for Golf Cabriolet), whereas 054905377G is a 535mm Knock Sensor with wiring harness suitable for PG, PB, PF, PL and RV Engines between 1990 and 1998 (or 2002 for Golf Cabriolet)."

So, for my PB engine, I need the 054905377G one.

Some interesting info for those looking for the original Bosch one: 0261231013. This guy is selling them: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261487975413?_trksid=p2055120.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

It works about £24 including delivery from the U.S.
