one of my bi-xenons is dying - URGENT ! HELP !
« on: 28 May 2014, 22:02 »
Hi guys

one of my bi-xenons seems to be nearing the end of its days, since last night it started emitting a purple-like light compared to the bright white of the other one, and it flickers a lot.

the car is year 10/2009.  My question is, which part will need changing (out of xenon control unit, gas discharge lamp, bulb, ...).  Also, anyone knows the cost of what needs to be changed?  And finally, can a non-specialized person fit what needs to change?

thanks
Wife's: mk8 TSI 1.4 RL, 5dr atlantic blue, DSG, Norfolk 17", pan s/r, leds
Now: mk7.5 TSI 1.4 RL, 5dr tornado red, DSG, Singapore 17", pan s/r, leds
Before: mk6 GTI 5dr candy white, DSG, Monza Shadow 18", s/r, bi-Xenons, DCC
Even before that: mk5 GT 5dr tornado red, manual, s/r

Swap the bulbs over and see if the problem moves

If it does chances are its just the bulb that needs replacing

already gone out, removed bulb, followed Rhyso's advice, seems it's only the bulb.  Easy to remove and fit back.

Final question guys: the fitted one is 35W 4300K ... anyone knows for sure whether i could fit a stronger bulb without changing anything else or causing further problems  - i came across 6000k ones... just wondering

Stick with the OEM output as that actually gives you the most light

Its a common misconception that the higher the number the greater the light output but in fact the opposite is true

Also you may want to replace both bulbs as you may find a slight difference between the new and old bulb.....

thanks for the info mate, much appreciated.

i'll buy a pair of bulbs anyway and fit one first and see if there's any difference, the other bulb has been changed last summer so I wouldn't expect much of a diff.

I'm sticking with the philips brand that is already fitted on the car, hopefully it won't die on me before i manage to get my hands on a replacement

I have THESE fitted after the cheap ones I orignally bought from Ebay turned out to be fakes and gave up after six months.

They give off a much crisper white light than the OEM ones and make the original Xenons look a bit yellow.
I think they are now standard fit to new Mercs.

It takes a fair few hours to get them burned in but they are not cheap, however most of the Phillips ones on Ebay are fakes.

The ones I bought were in original VW OEM boxes but were fakes so I just went for the Osram CBI
Mk6 GTI 3dr | DSG | Tornado Red | 18" Monza 2 | LED Xenons | RNS510 | Bluetooth | Smoked LED tails | Cruise | Reversing Camera | TPMS | - now sold :(

what a mess!  called a shop selling the Philips XenStart 9285 141 294 D1S 35W i need for my car, they gave me a price of 120 pounds per pair.  Called the dealer, gave me a price of 400 pounds for the pair.  When I asked the dealer why such a difference, they said it's because what they are selling are gas discharge ones !!!

Am i looking at two different things here (i.e. Do Philips XenStart 9285 141 294 D1S 35W come as gas discharge ones and as non-gas discharge ones OR is the dealer playing me?)

The dealers price for these bulbs is extortionate and he is talking through his a???

There is only one type of the Philips XenStart D1S, just watch where you buy them and make sure they are an authorised distributor.
