You'd be surprised how much insurance goes down after 1 years NCB. I'd personally wait until you have at least a year and then you'll have more money to throw at it then.

I got my first mk2 a few months before I had my years NCB, spent loads of time getting it up to scratch so I could jump straight in. That was 7 years ago and I still drive a Mk2, albeit not the same one ha!

Agree with some of the others - most on here will have done our time in a sh!tbox car to get some NCB built up. It's part and parcel of driving unless you're incredibly wealthy! I know I did - two little mk3 fiestas, a 1.1 and a 1.3

Also, it's worth noting that when you pass your test is when you start to learn to drive. Many new drivers have accidents, big or small. Hence, sh!tbox that you don't care about is a good idea at first so should the worst happen it won't be a tragedy.

It's good that you have a passion for Mk2s, as you really do need it. If you're going to have one long term it will bring you joy, but there will also be a heck of a lot of blood, sweat, tears and heartbreak along the way. There will also be a huge hole in your finances where sensible things like home improvements should be catered for.

I'm female too and 29 now, I've had my mk2 'Trev' since 2006, he was passed down to me from my dad (I also had a lust for the Mk2 from an early age!!), done around 70k miles together now and my insurance is just shy of £200. I love that car more than is natural or possibly healthy and I'm just waiting for the day I can afford to have his bodywork done - one day!

Buy a small engine car and spend the rest on decent discs, pads and tyres.

having been in this position myself id say weigh up your options.

you can afford the mk2, but in a years time will you be able to insure it again, will you be able to afford the maintenance and upkeep of it. and most importantly will you be able to afford to have a life.

I know many people who have fast cars, trouble is, they cant afford to do anything else. they either sit at home on a weekend or go sit with a mate in a car park because they cant afford to go on nights out, go to the cinema go on holidays etc.

when I was 17 I really wanted a mk4 gti, I had the money there for the insurance, my job meant I could afford to run it and maintain it and tax it and pay insurance the next year etc etc etc. I could also afford to go out every weekend and waste best part of £100 getting drunk, could afford to go on 1, 2 or sometimes 3 holidays a year etc etc etc and just have a life aswell as the car I wanted, therefore I went for it, people said I was mad paying the price I did for insurance, but it was only money and id only waste it on other stuff...

so my advice is if you can afford to have a life then go for it...

I bought my first Mk2 as I hated them so would never spend any money it, which had been a problem with my fetish for Sweedish cars....Bad move

Mcgee is right though in a sense, if you live at home have a good job and can afford to dish money out hand over fist and still go out for a laugh then go for it.
Once you get knocked up/trap a poor fellah with a baby/buy a house or all three, cars and fun go out of the window
Once you are over 35 you stop looking cool in a MK2 and just look like someones dad or mum taking the car for an MOT anyway.

Some things ar best done young

What did you did for a job at 17?

I could go easily afford the lease or even finance on a Golf R but am desperately saving for a property.

Sometimes I think why don't I just be young and get one then I think nah a £2000 Clio will have more fun as not worrying about it.
