I'm conflicted as to whether to buy an MK2?!
« on: 27 May 2014, 19:33 »
Right, I'm 17, and about 15 years ago I completely fell head over heels in love with the MK2. I can SEE myself in one, but obviously being 17, insurance is coming out at about the 3.7k mark. I'm currently a sales apprentice getting a base rate of £400 a month, so of course I could pay for insurance and a little bit of fuel but not have much left over. Beauty of being in sales means I do earn commission.
Friends have said about black boxes to get the insurance down but why buy a car with a 1781cc engine if you're not going to use it?!
Basically, I need you guys to tell me how amazing they are so I can justify it to myself. I'm young and have no responsibility so really what other money do I need?

Heart or Head?  :undecided:

Not worth 4k to insure at 17, you wont get anything back when you stuff it and not be able to insure anything after it let alone run it.
Get a 1.1 poverty spec polo or something until you get a few years ncb.

I can see myself in a Ferrari but it isnt going to happen

Get a Lupo / Polo or equivalent as a cheap runaround, build up your NCB's and then move on

Get a povo spec car for a few years and enjoy spending your money on booze, food and holidays. I ran an astra van for about three years before getting my MK2 - it was well worth it as I even had enough money to fund a bit of an overlap between cars to sort out a few bits on the golf. Remember also, you wont be able to mod on top of that at 17 :)

Sigh, not the answers I was hoping for but I can't really argue with majority opinion.....

Okay even more off topic.... What about an Austin Mini? Dead cheap to insure but then there are reliability questions!

I don't like cars unless they're old.. I'm asking for trouble but you really can't beat a classic?

Mini's are easy to fix and cheap to run.
They do conk out a lot, are terribly uncomfortable and rust like nothing else.
A solid one will command a good price as most are welded year to year for the mot.
Something about them though

Get a cheap polo,it's going to be more reliable than a mini and use the saved money to go towards a golf,mk2 are brilliant little cars, why not get a mk2 1300 cc to start off with?then work your way upto a gti
