Hey guys,

I pulled off for work this morning in my GTI as usual. I got down the street then applied the brakes gently to turn into the next street. As soon as I turned the corner I heard a very loud and strange grinding/squeaking noise which at first I thought was the radio! I turned off the radio and it was coming from the back of the car. It sounded like a squeaky belt, but was definitely related to the wheels as the sound changed constantly as you were driving and when I pulled over the noise "spooled down" to silence. It's hard to describe.

Anyway I pulled over. Got out the car and checked visually my rear wheel expecting to see a flat tyre or the like but there was nothing so I pulled back off and the sound was still there! I pulled over again. Applied the handbrake and turned the engine off to inspect the car more thoroughly. Everything seemed fine. So I got back in the car again, turned on the ignition and squeezed the brake pedal a few times to try and loosen anything off and then the car drove fine all the way to work with the sound gone. Not had it since.

Car wasn't washed recently so it's not that...

Anyone else had this or any ideas on what it could be?

Possibly a stone trapped between the brake disc and the shield behind it? Would probably make more of a screeching / squealing noise than a grinding noise; like this

If this is what was causing the noise and it's stopped now, whatever had become trapped between disc and shield is likely to have dislodged itself.

If still continues and occurs on turning and maybe just one way then possibly loose gaitors twisting and turning in on themselves (groaning noise).

Happened to me and a few others on here. They just secure the gaitors in a few minutes.

Apparently when pucks are removed the gaitors then need securing and this was not done.

If just on braking then obviously something else that needs checking but just throwing this know fault in there.
