Help! Mk2 Engine swap
« on: 26 May 2014, 11:40 »
Hi everyone, I'm new to the whole forums thing but I've been driving VW's since I starting driving 4 years ago, I've recently got my hands on a very clean mkII 1.3 to start as a project. The shell is immaculately clean with no rust but the engine's pretty much dead or at least nearly there (head gasket, leaking rad etc..) It was my intention before I bought it that I was going to do an engine swap and I want to put a 1.8 gti into it, so here's where my question starts... This will be my first time taking on a task like this so I just need to know the list of EVERYTHING I will need to carry it out (obviously the engine and gearbox). If anyone would mind writing out a list of all the things I will need for the conversion then I would be very grateful, thanks for reading
:)

Ok here we go. The gti are injection engines rather than carbed. your choices are the 8v or 16v gti. You will need then an engine, gearbox, loom, all hoses and pipes, airbox, fusebox.

I would say the best way of you doing this to find an entire donor car. As you have, you should buy mk2s of body condition so you should be able to buy a dirty cheap tatty gti and have everything you need.

While you are at it you should also take the rear axle and disk brakes, The suspension, the front brakes, the master cylinder, the servo. Basically put all of the gti into the driver.

Might be worth checking your insurance as a first step before diving in.

You'll want gti fuel pumps (and wiring for them) as well off a donor vehicle, as the 1.3 has mechanical pump on the engine, no lift pump in tank, nor high pressure pump. Maybe easier to just swap tanks.
Oh, and driveshafts will need to come across from the donor too; and exhaust system.

Fair point about insurance above too.

I would consider getting a 16v 1.8L as a donor car and taking everything across from that. It will probably work out cheaper and easier to do the conversion than buying all of the parts separately. It will also provide you with a reference for part locations and how it all assembles together. If you're converting it from a 1.3L to a 1.8L, I would consider doing a Mk3 2.0L ABF conversion. The 1.8L 16v conversion is more tricky than others for a Mk2 - as you need to swap a lot on the car. I have heard the 8v engines and the Mk1 1.6 GTI conversions are easier!
