Steering rack
« on: 20 May 2014, 01:59 »
Hi.
How do I tell which power steering rack I have on our 1996 Mk3 golf please?
I believe that there may be at least two types fitted - how do they differ so I can recognise which one?

How big a job is it to swap out?
Are we talking removing sub frames or anything like that? Or can it be done on axle stands?

ZF or TRW :)

ZF has "waffles" or what should i call it. "Squares" that TRW doesn't.

Yes. Ours is your standard 2litre auto GL Hatchback.
Does that make a difference, or is the ZF rack still having the "waffles" and the "other" not?

I know i have ZF "waffles" on my 16v -96. But it seems like VW just picked whatever they had at the moment. Like as far as i know 288 mm front discs came -95 on all "preformance" models. I have 280 mm

Same with coolant. 95 they swapped to G12, i have G11

Normal time stamps on Mk3 is: 92-94 and 95-98. But some things dosen't make any sense

Sorry for offtopic

Simple job to remove, not that many things to undo.

Have a mate or be prepared to balance the subframe on a car jack to lift up to the car.
